I did this on my boat and it's pretty cool.  The strip does multiple colors and makes for a cozy interior.  I need to put a filter on it though as when I turn my water on, the water pump fluctuates the current enough to make the light go through its various colors.  That aside, the light is pretty bright and I ran it over my chart table so I now have a light that I can make red in the cabin. 

Just cut the transformer off.  I removed the light above the shelf on the port settee and wired it to that.  I ran the switch down along side the wood that covers the holding tank pump out hose.

I just had my cutlass bearing and old bronze shaft replaced w/ a new stainless steel shaft.  Corrosion got the best of my shaft and it was literally flaking off in layers.  Now I'm trying to trouble shoot the corrosion problem.  My boat yard said that stainless steel is harder and less prone to electrolysis (but not impervious).  Another expensive boat yard visit....
