FYI: The Mariposa is now on the auction block in Galveston Yacht Club. It's not a pretty picture,but it faired better than any of the boats around her. Shes up to 10100.00 as of today. The auction will be over on Saturday. If anyone is interested, leave a note on this board and I'll give a email address and any info you may need. If I was 20yrs younger, I'd bought her. I think that web site puts their items on ebay along with other salvage folks.
I'm not sure what the bidders plan on doing with the boat. If they plan on refurbishing the boat, they have to declare it hurricane damaged and that will dramatically effect the value. As I have said before, the most damage was to the starboard side where the boat was forced to break off a telephone size post at the mud line. The other damage was all of the deck hardware and all of the standing rigging was either damaged or comprised. I don't know about the amount of damage on the bottom. It's going to take a rather large amount of money to repair even if you do it yourself. If you just patched the starboard side and not stiffen the cored part, it might not cost but about 30 to 40 grand.
FYI: The Mariposa went for $20.000.01.
In some ways, I'm sorry for you Norris. It must be hard to see your baby go, but I hope that the insurance company made you whole, and I also hope that the new owner will do the honorable thing and make your formerly wonderful boat wonderful again. BTW, if the new owner happens to get in touch with you, don't forget to tell him/her about our Association, and that we ready to help (in the form of advice).
What are your plans now? Another boat? Another C34? Hope you'll stay part of the "family," even if you end up with another woman ;)

I posted some questions about Mariposa a bit further up in the forums. Also just to let you know that your old boat will be in very good hands. One of me crew is a professional boat builder and he will be taking care of the hull damage. I will do the rest myself. I have been around sailboats and racing my whole life. At the moment I own and race a Laser 28 (which is now for sale) on Lake Okanagan in Kelowna BC Canada. I think it will take about six months to get Mariposa back to where she was and I will post some pictures after we have finished. I guess there is a silver lining to this story as I would not have been able to afford a boat like this if it had not been for the hurricane. I am still organizing flights to Houston and I should be in Galveston at the end of next week. It would be great if I could meet you for a coffee and talk boats.
