This MK II offers the best in cruising accommodations and ease of handling. Her walk-through transom and the wide cockpit is second to none in size, comfort, safety and conveniences.
Below deck you are treated to a bright spacious salon, private forward and aft cabins, convenient aft head, and complete galley. So many upgrades have been completed that a personal tour is needed.

Main Message Board / Wind indicator
July 21, 2022, 11:36:14 AM
My old wind indicator looks to have finally failed. Wind direction is good but wind speed doesn't work and I'm told the parts and/or repairs are not available. So, I'm looking at upgrading. My boat tech is recommending an Airmar 120 WX weather station as it will plug right into my backbone and gives me all sorts of info on the Garmin, including barometric, temp, etc. in addition wind speed and direction.
However, this unit looks like it gets mounted at cabin height or possibly at radar height - not mast top. It seems to me that I want wind speed and direction readings for mast height and this unit is more suited to a power vessel?? Beyond that, these things are not cheap!

Anybody have some recommendations on what I need/should go to?
Thanks,
Jim

Main Message Board / attached cockpit seat cushions
March 04, 2021, 11:27:24 AM
Has anyone come up with a good way to secure the cockpit cushions so they don't slide about? Seems to be a bit of an annoyance for me and a safety issue when coming back to the cockpit from the foredeck as they can slip out especially if healing.
Ideally, we keep them stowed when sailing but with guests and family aboard.... and also, for me when cranking winches, they are great to kneel on but easily skid about.
I'm thinking of putting folding pad-eye's along the edge or????

Thanks for any suggestions.

Main Message Board / Updated advice on Engel
January 18, 2021, 01:03:19 PM
Hi all,
I've been searching posts and then wondering if anyone had some updated advice on adding additional freezer/cooler?

Last season we used our fridge for general refrigerated items and a separate cooler with ice for frozen foods. We rotated frozen jugs of water from the freezer section of the fridge to the cooler to help but it was a struggle to keep things from defrosting while away on an extended cruise.

I was going to look at a higher end cooler (Yeti) but then was wondering about stepping up to an Engel 12 volt.
Is the cost jump worthwhile and, if so, ideas on best size and location to keep it?

Thanks,
Jim

Main Message Board / Top 10 spares to have on board
December 04, 2020, 10:00:01 AM
I'm sure this has been discussed at length previously but I thought it worth throwing out there again.

In the quiet of the winter, I'm busy planning our summer cruise schedule which usually includes a bigger adventure to remote areas. To avoid added grief of getting caught without the ability to fix problems that may arise, part of the planning consists of reviewing my inventory of spares.
There's a few obvious ones such as primary and secondary fuel filters, oil filters and pump belts.

What are your top suggestions of spares to keep on board?

Main Message Board / Sailing limits
October 27, 2020, 08:51:01 AM
Hi all,
This past weekend we had a club Boyz cruise. For a reasonably novice sailor, I thought it was pretty challenging conditions with winds up to 34 knts. and 4-5' seas at times. I was mostly sailing with the main reefed (one reef point only on my rig) and 1/2 a head sail. We were "well powered" and almost dousing the head sail at times but..
My question is, it seems to me that 20-30 knts is about where we want to be. I could see managing up to a max of about 40 knts but would think that's about it?
Am I way off (high or low) for the experienced bunch on this forum?

Appreciate the comments in advance.

I have a few extra spare sails that I've decided to sell to clear out the sail locker.
Both from my 34 MKII Tall rig;
135% Genoa and a Main sail (exact spec's on request)
Both just surveyed by my local sail maker, Leitch and McBride here in Sidney, BC. Both in good condition. The Main has grommets for my Dutchman sail system.

$500 Can each.
Prefer local sale as shipping would be awkward.

Main Message Board / Value of used sails
August 14, 2020, 02:53:06 PM
I have a couple of spare sails for our 34 tall rig that I'm think I should sell off as I just don't need that many spares. Being reasonably new to sailing and our boat I'm just not sure of the value so thought I should ask...
Both have just been inspected by Leitch and McBride sailmakers and reported to be in good condition. One is a spare mainsail with grommets for our Dutchman system (but no Dutchman bags attached) and the other is a 110 Genoa. Both are in sail bags.

I can get exact measurements as needed but wondered if I can get a ball park value that I should ask? I'm guessing I should just advertise them locally as they'd be a pain to ship...

Main Message Board / Settee table, center berth
July 19, 2020, 02:24:56 PM
I just rebuilt our galley table as it was simply screwed to the single pedestal and was getting wobbly. I bolted a 1/4" aluminum plate to the pedestal and then mounted the table top to that. Greatly improved and solid now. But, our pedestal does retract to convert to a center berth and we have the cushion that fits in. All works great and it's obvious that the intention was from the factory but, the only weight support is from the aluminum center post and if weight is imparted on the outside edges of the table, I'm pretty sure it won't hold even given the upgrade I've done. I checked to see that there aren't wood blocks on the lower part of the seats and see that the gap between the table and seating is too large to be practical.

We'd like to be able to use this for grandkids etc. Any suggestions on what was intended on this feature?

Main Message Board / Capping a thru-hull
June 05, 2020, 10:09:42 AM
I've been stuck coming up with the best solution for capping off an old (Espar heater, I think..) exhaust thru-hull. It's about 2.5" and well above the water line. It looks like it was just cut off near the hull and stuffed with a cork bung. It's one of the last items that the surveyor pointed out that needs to be "properly capped".
Any suggestions on best method of capping this?

Main Message Board / Covid bored project
March 28, 2020, 06:09:24 PM
Hi all,
Just thought I'd share a project I just completed while social distancing.
I changed up the white laminate upper galley cupboards to teak to match the run from the main salon. Looks much closer to the styling of the new Cats and, I feel, is a great upgrade.

Main Message Board / Air filter on M35B
March 14, 2020, 02:44:55 PM
After some recent service work I was looking at the (I assume) original air filter on my M35B with the wire wool filter. It appears to be fairly oil soaked and the blow-by hose is simply sitting beside the air filter with some bilge pad underneath to catch drips. It doesn't seem to be a big problem with oily residue in the engine compartment but I should be able to improve on this...
Is there a good replacement air filter option for these that is an improvement? Also, is the best idea to have the blow-by hose empty into some kind of container?

Main Message Board / organized anchor locker
March 10, 2020, 01:53:14 PM
Hi all,
Again, I'm a new 34 MKII owner and looking at replacing an aged anchor chain/rode after having added a new Rocna.
I have to check the guage of chain and length of what's there now and the length of rode. Thought I'd see what is ideal on length's but it does appear to be subjective....
The previous owner had used a bucket to load the rode into and set that on top of the chain. Seems to make it fairly easy to keep the rode from sitting wet in the bottom of the locker.
Just wondering if others had suggestions on length of chain and rode and/or organization tips of their lockers?

Main Message Board / Overall height
March 09, 2020, 10:02:48 AM
As we're new to our 99 MKII tall rig, just wondering if someone could advise the overall height (water line to mast tip)? Pretty sure the mainsail area is 46' but was curiously looking for bridge clearance height and couldn't find it in the spec's...

Thanks in advance.

Fleet 5 / New 34 owners
January 10, 2020, 02:29:09 PM
Hi all,

My wife and I are relatively new Cat 34 MKII owners. We now have most of our new ownership modifications completed and ready for the 2020 season. Hope to meet a few of you throughout the Gulf Islands and Puget Sound.

Cheers,
Jim and Allison
