I'm heading to the boat tomorrow to winterize and need to drain the aft water tank, however I currently have my water pump removed because I'll be installing a new one in the spring.  So, how do I drain the aft tank without using the water pump and running the water out through a faucet? 

It's been awhile since I've even looked at the aft tank and can't remember if there is access to pull off an inlet hose from the aft lazarette or if there's an access panel on the aft cabin's aft bulkhead. 

I've got an M25XPB and have been having a low volume/faint but persistent oil pressure alarm sound from the panel when operating at some rpm's between about 1700-2000 and then again around 2500, but not if I increase to 2600.  The oil pressure gauge shows normal pressures between 30-60psi. The oil level is normal and I haven't had any issues with the engine otherwise.

I'm pretty sure the issue is with the low oil pressure alarm since the sound is a faint pulsating alarm as opposed to the continuous signal of the water temp alarm. In any case, water temp is also good, always staying below 160F.

Could my low oil pressure alarm be faulty? Is there another issue I can investigate?  Hearing the alarm, faint as it might be, is stressful even after I've confirmed oil level & pressure and water temps in spec via gauges. 

I was over checking on the boat yesterday and noticed a drip from the acorn nut on the galley ceiling (it's the one directly aft of the dorade vent opening on the starboard side). Looks like I'll need to rebed (or at least investigate) whatever hardware this is attached to.  Looking at the cabin top directly above the nut, it appears it may be holding part of the mainsheet traveler, but there's not an obviously bolt on the topside since the nut is directly under the molded fiberglass base for the traveler.

Anyone know what this nut/bolt is used for?

I ordered a replacement lens for the port in the head last summer, but never installed it because it appears the lens I received is a mirror image (reversed orientation) of what I need. In other words, the top hinge connections are reversed so that the left side has a bolt/screw and the right side has a smaller diameter pin. You would think I could just flip the lens over and have the hinges aligned correctly, but the lens is "one-sided" since there's a flange that extends from around the edge on what's suppose to be the interior side of the lens.  Also, I can't seem to figure out how to remove the pin that's in one of the hinges on the existing lens. I'm not sure if this pin is OEM, or if a previous owner replaced a bolt/screw with the pin for some unknown reason.

Anyone else have this issue or have any tips?  I'll try to add pictures of what I'm talking about tomorrow to clear up my descriptions.

It's that time of year again, so I'm still interested in a used winter cover if anyone has one available.

I went to the boat yesterday to check on her and refinish the exterior teak. I did my usual bilge inspection and was very surprised to see the bilge filled with about 3-5” of diesel (maybe 2+ gallons?).  Yikes! The oil rag/pad I keep in the pan under the engine was also saturated with fuel.  I did a quick look around and didn’t notice any obvious sources for the leak. I looked at/felt the fuel filters, bottom of the engine, most of the fuel lines and the bilge area under the head sink. Nothing noticeable. Maybe the leak only occurs while the engine is running?

The boat has been sitting in the slip for the last 2.5 weeks since I’ve been busy with life. The last time I was out (2.5 weeks ago) I changed the fuel filters and went out for a 3 hour sail. I peeked at the filters while sailing and didn’t notice any leaking at the time. However, I did see a clear wet streak on the inside of the hull coming down from behind the fuel tank shelf. I didn’t think much of it at the time and figured it might actually be a water leak from a stanchion or the hull/deck joint since we had had a lot of rain. The streak was gone and/or dried when I looked at that area after discovering fuel in the bilge yesterday. Now I plan to pull the panel in the aft cabin and closely inspect the fuel tank, shelf and fill/vent lines. I wonder if the tank itself could be leaking or perhaps one of the hoses going to the deck/transom.

Per my research here, I’ll do a more methodical search and inspection on Friday including looking at all fittings, fuels lines, fuel pump, fuel filters, etc.  I also might try to unscrew the fuel filters and put them back on to be certain I have a good seal and proper fit.  Just to be clear – Is it ok to start the engine to look for the leak?  I noticed several threads on here suggesting an inspection with the engine running, but this wasn’t intuitive for me.

I soaked up as much of the fuel as I could with oil rags and then pumped the remaining leaked fuel and water out of the bilge with my manual dinghy pump and put it in a container for proper disposal later. I also shut off the fuel via the petcock on top of the fuel tank. I’m not sure what to make of it if there’s more fuel in the bilge when I return on Friday. I suppose it means either something on the engine is leaking or the tank itself is leaking since the petcock is closed. 

I realize y’all can’t diagnose a leak from my description above, but I thought I’d post anyway to see if there’s anything obvious I missed or should do as a next step.  Thanks!

I need to replace the sealing gasket on the port installed in the head.  It's the Gray/Pompanette model.  I see Pompanette/Bomar (http://www.pompanette.com) sells the gaskets for $5.50 a foot and I need about 3', but they have a minimum order of $30.  Anyone know of another source for the gaskets so I don't have to spend and receive more than I need? 

Anyone know the length (approximate) of a symmetrical spinnaker for the C34? I'd like to get a sock/sleeve for ours before spring and can't get to the sail anytime soon to get a measurement. 

Also, any thoughts on the ATN Tacker for handling a symmetrical spinnaker? I've got a pole, but don't have a topping lift/down for the pole, so I figure using a Tacker might be easier than installing blocks/pad eyes for the pole lines. We only intend to use the spinnaker occasionally while cruising in light air (no racing, etc.) so I'm not too concerned about limited trim because of the Tacker.

I've finally got some time to go through our boat's system more closely and am trying to figure how our batteries are wired.

All three batteries are linked via the black/neg wires, but all red/positive wires are separate.

For some reason, the boat has two battery selector switches, each with 1, 2, all and off. The "1" post on the first selector has two of the red/positive wires. The "2" post on the first selector is wired to the "1" post on the second selector. That's all I can remember about the wiring at this point, but will examine more closely the next time I'm back at the boat.

All 12v systems function when the first selector is on "1" or "all", but nothing works on "2". However, if the first selector is on "2" and the second selector is on "1" or "all", all 12v systems function. Anyone have an idea why it's wired this way?

I can't seem to understand why there are 2 separate selector switches with only 3 batteries. Ideally, I'd like one battery on position "1" of a single selector (engine), and batteries 2 & 3 in parallel on position "2" of the same selector (house).

Does anyone know of a source for a bracket used to attach teak steps to the SS boarding ladder?  My boat came with 3 teak step pads, but they weren't installed and don't have brackets to attach them to the SS tubing on the ladder. 

Anyone ever used Sea Wizard Marine Canvas for cockpit cushions?  I spoke with the owner a couple of weeks ago and was told their cushions are constructed with Textilene Sunsure fabric, 2" thick waterproof closed-cell foam, and Sunbrella trim piping, stitched together with UV resistant thread.  Price was $525 (plus $10 shipping), which seems very fair.  I ordered some yesterday and will report back when they arrive.

I was at the boat recently prepping her for spring launch and noticed that the coolant in the overflow reservoir is below the "low" line.  I seem to recall it being properly between the "low" and "high" marks last fall.  Have the crazy cold winter temps messed with the fluid or perhaps I have a leak somewhere?  Any cause for concern?

Anyone know how to fix one of the Lewmar opening ports if it won't stay up in the open position? I've got one that clicks back down a couple notches towards the closed position. I assume the hinges have lost friction or whatever it is that holds them open.

I've got a few small spots on the deck where the paint has been chipped/nicked off and I'd like to touch them up in the offseason.  Anyone know what paint to use to match the beige on a 1987? 

Anyone ever wrapped their mast inside the cabin with rope?  I tried a search but couldn't find anything.  My wife would like to add a decorative touch to our keel stepped mast, but doesn't like the vinyl/leather wraps we've seen on other boats.  Just curious to know if anyone has used rope and how it turned out.

My boat has what I believe is the original Charles Industries C-Charger battery charger.  It seems to be providing a charge just fine, but it produces an annoying hum when on shorepower.  The Guest battery charger I had on my previous boat never made a peep.  Am I just hearing normal charger noise or should I have it check out or perhaps change to a different battery charger?

Both sides of the black plastic/lexan sliders that cover the salon cabinets have cracks.  Anyone know where I can get replacements?  I checked Catalina Direct and didn't see them listed.

Anyone have a used winter cover they no longer need? If so, let me know condition and how much you're hoping to get for it.  We just purchased a 1987 C34 and our boat cash needs to rebound before we purchase a new custom cover.

Just thought I'd make a quick post to introduce myself.  My wife and I recently purchased a 1987 TR/WK C34 and are happily getting to know her a bit before the quickly approaching fall haul-out.  Looks like this forum and the C34IA will be an outstanding resource for us as owners.
