where may a central air conditioner be placed for good efficiency

mine is in the locker beside and under the chart table.  outlets are run to aft cabin, head, main cabin and forward.

Same here, in the hanging locker just aft of the nav station.  I have vents going to the rear salon, the main cabin and the v-berth.  Some people put their A/C's under the v- berth, which is a good place.  The advantage is that is a space that most people rarely use and therefore you don't miss it.  The disadvantage is that it is on one end and its harder to cool down the aft salon.  Also, my wife and I sleep in the V so it would be a little loud.
