Title: Storage/Access question
Post by: Lance Jones on January 12, 2009, 05:37:14 AM
I have enjoyed all the posts on this site and there is a wealth of insight into our wonderful boats. Thanks for all the help. :clap

Now for the question...

Has anyone ever put an access panel BEHIND the sink? I was thinking of cutting an access panel through the back of the settee similar to those used for storage behind the port & starboard settee's. Are there any problems other than watch out for hoses, wires, etc? Also, what is the material that they use to line the cut out on this type installation to guard the rough edges. My other option was a drop down door to cover it.

Cheers!

P.S. How'd the best pharmacy post get on the site?

Access panel:  Why do you see the need to do so?  Other than that, the liner material most likely can be found at Catalina Direct.com.

Spam?  See http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4647.0.html

I think that it would be usefull on my boat for access to the sink and faucet & drainhoses. I know I plan on updating the drains soon and IF there were a leak or some other emergency, It would provide me more direct access to an area I can't really reach from either the drawer side or the door at the end.

Cheers!

I've been putting off redoing the sink drains because we have a microwave where your small drawer is under the sink.  This gives me another approach, literally and figuratively.  Hmmm....

since it will probably only be accessed to work on the sink.  Make your cut out.  Epoxy backing blocks Top, bottom, left & right onto the back of the remaining seat back.  When you are done working on the sink/plumbing  put the cut out back in place and use screws to hold it to the backing blocks until you need to get in again.  Depending on how your water hoses are routed, may have to move them before you start cutting.

Lance : There are a number of articles on removing the small drawer under the sink and expanding access from the steps side of the sink.  Some people have used a louvered door, where I enlarged that small drawer with a much larger drawer.  I can pull out that drawer and frame, and have full access to the plumbing under the sink.

Look at some of the articles I've written on making extra storage (Mainsheet Tech Notes Nov 06).

Well, I made the cut after work and I'm pleased with the results so far.

Image 1 is of the access area
Image 2 is a different angle
Image 3 after basic clean-up

Note: will add moulding trim when I find it. With cushion in place, one can't feel the cut-out

You now have access to the back, but you still might want to modify the front to gain even wider access and have more storage ?!  A thought

I had planned to add the bigger drawer already; however, I was waiting on the H&L catalog. It arrived Saturday.  :D

So you plan to leave it open I take it? Or will you rig up something Ken suggests?
It does open access to some of the hard to get at hoses and above the water tank.

At this point I plan to leave it open. I saved the cut out if I decide to do it differently. When I was having my survey done, the surveyor was pointing out areas where dampness could lead to mold issues. This was one of those areas. So, this might provide some circulation that may ease that issue. Jury is still out.

Cheers!

The Admiral has spoken!  I shall cover said opening with an access hatch in the next few weeks. I'll post an image if anyone wants it when I'm done. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

Thanks!

Lance : You won't find that drawer in the H & L catalog.  You'll have to give them the measurements and have it made to size -- if you want the largest drawer for that space between the sink drain and the heater.  A thought

Does anyone know why am I not recognized as a member when I paid and thought I was? I can't get to tech notes (this is first time I have tried to) and I need a password?? Think my membership was lost? Only acknowledgement I got was one Mainsheet Mag a long time ago.

Susan, I replied to you about your C34IA membership via a "personal message."

Susan : H &L Marine are the people that did the teak drawers/shelves etc on the interior of the C34s.
I'm traveling, but I'll guess that the drawer that I had made measures something like 16" W / 18" L /
8" H.  It's a substantial drawer replacement for the tiny drawer that was there (I moved that small drawer to the aft cabin).  The new drawer now holds all of the pot/pans/BBQ fork & spatula etc. and there is still space left.  A nice addition to the galley.   :thumb:
When the drawer & frame are removed there is complete access to the underside of the sink plumbing!!

Just ordered the low profile "inspection hatch" for the sink access project. It should be here by weeks end and then the project will be done by the weekend. I'll post more photos when it's done. Would this be a suitable "Project" for the projects page? If so, what format should I use to submit it?

Great idea to memorialize your work and share it with others as a Project, Lance.  And guess what, it's the perfect candidate to be first new project in our developing wiki... and you can do it yourself!  You'll need to register in the wiki in order to be able to add/edit content.  I've given you a start by already creating the "shell" of an article in the "galley" section and also uploading the pictures that you posted here.  The "top" of the wiki is here: c34.org/wiki.  You can click to your project article by going to the "sink" section in the "galley" area or just go here: http://www.c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Sink_Access.  Once you've registered and logged in (different from this Message Board, but you're free to use the same ID/password), just click edit on the top of the article page.  If you just put the project text in and replace the "placeholder captions," I'd be happy to add a touch of fancy formatting to facilitate readability.  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.

Thanks Jon,
I added the information on what I've done so far. Once the hatch gets here, I'll add the final paragraph or two with photos.

The hatch arrived today and I took it to the boat. Installation took less than an hour from the time I opened the box that the hatch came in to the time I put the cushions back in place. I tried to take pictures; but, the batteries were dead. So, new batteries tomorrow and I'll add the pictures. I also updated the Wiki page and will add pictures there. Great project.

As promised. Here are the finished projects photos. Jon, will you post on wiki or should I?

Lance wrote up a terrific narrative of how he did this project and published it on the wiki.  Find it here: www.c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Sink_Access.  If you're browsing the wiki knowledgebase in general (www.c34.org/wiki), you'll find Lance's article listed in both the Galley and Plumbing sections (same article; two ways to find it).  As of today, neither of those sections, however, have been converted to a full wiki, so most of the other articles will take you to the "old" Projects and FAQ sections (all of which are being converted to the wiki).  If you want to "experience" the wiki, browse the "Anchor" to "Engine" sections or the "Woodworking" to "Refrigeration" sections, which have been completed.  Feel free to add, correct, and comment on the material!

Lance, thanks again for contributing a great project idea and volunteering to be the first wikier  :clap
