David Penz is correct. Anytime that I have a question I go back to Catalina and ask David Graas or Gerry Douglas.  David usually replys back the next day, Gerry when he gets a chance.

I always call and talk to the Manufacturer - "the horses mouth". You need to be careful about answers from the internet, as you don't know which end of the horse is speaking!   Ron

Paul : You have three choices. 1. replace/rebuild it from from Seaward  2. Convert it to kerosene/diesel  3. Jerk it out and put in a propane unit. ronphylhill@erols.com    ;)

Bill : If it's a Catalina Sail I'd call the factory and ask them if their sails were only meant to last ONE year. I had some new sails and had that area reinforced.  ronphylhill@erols.com ;)

Ken: If you're sure that your Racor filter/fuel  is clean, there's a better way to get the "Nasties" off your prop and shaft than to use a HARD steel scraper/putty knife on a SOFT bronze prop.

They are listed in most marine catalogs in wood or plastic. Or make your own - keyholeing each end and secure from underside with U brackets.

Peter : First of all you've got the WRONG prop!! Look in the C34 Mainsheet Tech. Notes that I wrote back in Nov 99 on prop size. The factory should have installed a 3 bladed, SAILOR type (VERY Important), 15"x9" prop. Most of us have increased the pitch. DO NOT change the diameter.

Screw with the goveror seals and you can kiss your engine warrentee goodby. Playing with that item is the LAST resort!!

Low rpm has many causes (clogged filter, nasties growing on the prop, etc.), one of which is too large a prop.

In the next Mainsheet (Aug 01)I have another PROP article in the tech notes.

If looking at your C34 Tech note CD doesn't help let me know.   Ron

Main Message Board / Portable voltage meter
July 02, 2001, 11:22:34 AM
Barb K : 12+ yrs ago (before I had a battery monitor) I installed two female bannana plugs on the main pannel at the Nav station. Just plug in a multimeter (on Volts) and you have a voltage reading depending on which battery the selector switch is on. I made a small chart with approx. %state-of-charge for 14 voltage readings.
You need a multi meter on the boat anyway, so why go out and buy something else? Interested in how I wired it and a copy of the chart let me know. ronphylhill@erols.com

Ken : Sounds to me like you've got a pin hole leak. I'd just buy a new one unless you want to take the old one out and see if you can have the aluminum alloy "innerds" welded.

Doug is correct on the removal and installation. I'm assuming that your C34 is a 1988 with a square water heater. Seaward sells a galvanized and a stainless model, however the price is different. Both have the same "innerds" so save your $ and buy the galavanized. Make sure that you get the version that has the same water hookups as the one you take out - or you'll be doing some additional plumbing.  Ron
