Brian,
Our 88 had some pretty sad caps on them when we bought her so I went ahead and ordered the SS caps from CD. I'm like Noah who doesn't appreciate them stamping their company name into the cap...but it is what it is.
I did find that the one for the starboard water tank tended to bottom out before I could feel the O-ring engage. For some reason CD had them made with a safety chain that is supposed to attach to....well.....I'm not sure.  :?
There is a small attachment point made directly into the bottom of the cap and I found that even when I'd removed the chain and screw that held it, the mount itself still contacted the shoulder inside the fill, stopping the cap from seating correctly. Since I couldn't use the chain anyway I ground this mount off and now all four work like a charm. I specifically remember this being a problem on the starboard water tank, definitely not the aft tank as the fill is 1-1/2" so there was more room to work with and this modification wasn't necessary. Same goes for the diesel fill and the waste port. Those fittings are all bigger, it was only that starboard tank fill that gave me fits.
Other than the above, they work well and I for one like them.

Hi All,

Have a new to me '86 Catalina 34. Looking to replace my diesel, waste, and water (2) caps which are very overdue.  Have these stainless steel replacement from Catalina Direct worked well for everyone?

Learning a lot from everyone here, looking to contribute too!

The engineering firm that does all the teak work for Tara Yachts had the teak and they also cut them to size and put the concave edge on each one. This firm is about 10 miles from my home.  I had used them before to make new eyebrows.

Lots of places to buy online, but it is not cheap. Google is your friend, search "Teak lumber". I would probably start with a 3/8 in. teak board. Then (I would think) you could do all the cutting and shaping with a sabre saw/skill saw, a power sander and/or hand sanding.

Paulus,
Where did you buy the teak for the trim pieces? Could you get the same thickness?
how did you fashion the convex exdges, if not with a router?
I need to replace both of my trim pieces due to cracks.

Logo Freak just did this during his new fuel tank job.  He used spray foam to fill it, shaved it flat and ran a few layers of glass over it.  I REALLY wish I had when I rebuilt my water tank shelf.  It is a challenging spot to get to for cleaning.

Noah is correct if you've got a leak in the aft tank that should be easy to determine. Without using it if you have to keep topping it off every few weeks or couple of months the tank is obviously leaking. If that's the case you also have another problem, the leaking tank will fill the pan that it sits in and when the boat heels the water runs to that side comes forward and leaks through the bottom of the bulkhead into the aft cabin. It's also possible if you haven't changed the cockpit drain hoses that could be the culprit, when I changed mine I don't know if they were leaking but they were badly cracked.

On the "Scag Dimple" (I actually had two) there was some really nasty standing water in mine. Using epoxy and filler I faired mine in so the bottom is smooth and any water now simply runs down to the bilge.

Filling the 'dimples' in was something I was considering as well.  They don't serve any purpose other than to provide a breeding ground for things I don't want on the boat!

Hey Antoni:

We will also be sailing around Vancouver Island this summer.  Leaving August 24 from Bainbridge Island and will be going counter-clockwise.

When I made the trip in 2016, the first fuel after rounding Cape Scott turned out to be at Esperanza on the NE corner of Nootka Island.  We were very happy to learn they had fuel there after we topped up in Port Hardy.  Nothing was available in Winter Harbor or Kyuquot in mid September.  Doubling the factory fuel capacity goes a long way on that coast—and in Mexico too.  Great upgrade.
