Lewmar Port Gasket

I have replaced 3 lewmar port gaskets. Dry fit only. No silicone. ( very hard to do )

We checked to make sure they they did not leak using a water hose. No leaks. Yea!

However, instructions say to take off gasket and apply a thin bead of silicone then place the gasket back in. I am thinking of ignoring this step. Just how important is a thin bead of caulk?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
