Replacement Winches

Our primary winches are of course Maxwell 26s which are not self tailing. The drums are very smooth and even with the sheets wrapped with 4 turns they slip terribly and "She who must be obeyed" thinks they would better serve as a fish reef and frankly I tend to agree with her. (not like I really have a choice) So the question is....what would you all replace them with? Also the guides to selecting the proper size seem more confusing than helpful so any insight there would be of great help.

Before you get sticker sahock on the cost of Lewmar winches, I recommend that you try Winchers.

Last year I found out that WM was doing a BoGo on Winches. I spread the word to my sailing club and I know that at least one member purchased a pair of #43 winches for the price of one.

More,  This year I looked into having Lewmars re-knurled for a customer but the problem is they were aluminum and the knurling breaks the anodizing and so they corrode.  With chrome they could he re-knurled and rechromed, but the cost may not be worth it because, of course, you still have 30 year old non ST winches.  I ended up replacing the drums for way less than new.  I really really like the Lewmar ocean series winches - I have 6 Lewmars on my 30 and am glad I went with them.

Have you considered using used winches?  You can try eBay or on of the consignment shops around, sailor man or Boater Resale Shop of Texas to name two.

Lewmar 48s on my Mk II. Also have a look at the new Pontos winches with extra low gears. They actually sell for less than the Lewmars and are very well reviewed. See:
