Opening Port Trim Paint

Although my boat has been gently maintained over the years and much of the interior is original, some things simply begin to show their age. One item that caught my attention was the yellowing of the opening port trim rings in the salon. I know I could probably buy a replacement but I was looking for a project and also wanted to save some $. (I had great results from the refinishing of my Dorade vents http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,6305.0.html ) so I thought I would go ahead and try my luck on the trim rings. I took each one off and thouroughly cleaned. Then I removed the old and crusty little velcro strips that remained. I then used the valspar Radiance Flat White spray paint to refinish. I did 2 coats and they look fantastic! I replaced the velcro strips with new and replaced the trim. Easy refresh for under $10.00 ... That's my kind of project!

HI,

Did the same last summer, but I used an aluminium finish color for mine.
It doesn't look nice on this picture, but the result is nicer in real ;-)

Does anyone know where you could get replacements? I have a crack in one of mine.

I figured Catalina Direct had them availablebut I did'nt bother to look figuring it was going to be cost prohibitive.
So when I just went there to provide you a link for replacements... I got This:

Apparantly Lewmar is no longer making them and Catalina Direct has sold out.

I did have a couple that had a minor crack but elected to apply a little adhesive and handle them gingerly after I painted them.

Hi,
I would suggest to do as Kevin did.
Remove them, put adhesive , caulking inside the trim.
When dry, put a nice fresh coat of spray paint and ' Voila'

nice, a like new trim piece...

Guys : I've heard that some C34 owners have made these replacement trim rings out of teak!!

I replaced mine with New Found Metals ports. I think I still have some of the trim pieces from the old ports.
I will try to check out in my shop this weekend if I can wade out through the snow. If I still have any I

I would love to hear more about your New Found Metals replacements.
Whats size and model did you use?
How difficult was the installation?
Did you use Mainsails DIY Guide?
Any tidbits of info would be awesome.

Fuzzy, have you gone up to the "My Messages" tab at the top of any of these pages? The software gives you a pop up notice one time only. If you "miss" that one time pop up, the "My Messages" tab is the way to access them.

I used their plastic model, not the all metal one.
The quality of the windows is pretty good I thought, especially when made in China as I didn't realize when I ordered them (I like
things "made in USA"}but I can overlook that. The only real problem I had is that they are not made for slanted "dog house" sides,
only plumb vertical or close to it. The problem is that they collect water when it rains but we got used to that and use a drywall
tray when we open them after a rain. Other than that they are far superior. Wasn't too hard to install, had to make a few adjustments
to the teak trim under the windows and also I planed the thickness of the teak trim that came from NFM because they were a little
too thick. All in all I'm happy with the outcome and a BIG improvement over the original factory installed units.

Guys : Rustolomium (sp?) makes a wood/plastic can spray paint that will work.

I've used the white on the vent base that the Dorade vents sit on and it does (/holds up) a great job.

So Lewmar is not making them and Catalina direct is out. Some folks have painted them. I have a bunch that are cracked and yellow. I have been toying with the idea of making a prototype and shopping it to a CNC shop to replicate. I have also thought about making a two piece out of HDPE or PLA and then a little glue to assemble. The question I have is, how much is a reasonable price for a new trim ring? $10? $15? $20? (60-120 for a set) Would it be better for a one piece or would a two piece be OK? These would be more solid than the originals, filling in the void with material. A little velcro or my new favorite Sugru for a permanent fix. The more interest, the cheaper it becomes. I have also looked into colors and other materials, so if you wanted real teak or a plastic teak, that could be a possibility. Let me know. Thanks, Joel
