Ron,

I believe it is 7/16 but can't be sure. Not sure how I can check whether it is BB or HT? The chain was installed by the PO.
My limited research suggests that it can be tricky if one is not sure what the chain actually is. A suggestion was to cut a foot of chain off and take it to the chandler and try it a few gypsies. For instance up here in Canada perhaps it was metric...oh boy!

Tom : I seriously doubt that your chain is 7/16"!! 
More likely it is 5/16", no more than 3/8" and probably BB.

You might well be right...anyways it's this off season's priority to sort out.

In the meantime my son and I are flying to Fiji next Tuesday to crew on Mahina across to Vanuatu for 12 days. Yippeee!
