Something that I noticed when rebedding the stanchions last winter was that the base (the sheet metal part) was deformed on some of the stanchions.  Pulled up? down? at the screw heads.   This caused the angle of the stanchion to change some.  I used a vice (the bench kind not the too much beer kind) to flatten the base.
