Donay's Dream I

I am interested in capturing the large volume of storage space in the aft lockers of my C34 MkII.  I have a few ideas but I would like to build on experience of other C34 MkII owners.

What are your storage ideas for the aft lockers?

Depends on what you want to store.

Last week, I made hangers the following way:  up at the top of the transom are the inside of the through bolts for the rubrail.  They stick in about an inch or two, and are regularly spaced.  I purchased fender washers and nylock nuts for seven of these.  On the starboard side I tied a shock cord to the first bolt, put on the fender washer and the nylock and tightened it.  I then looped the shock cord over the next bolt, put on a washer and nylock, and did the same all the way to the other end.

We then removed all the stored line that had been filling up our port locker, coiled them individually and looped the (long) bitter ends through the shock cords.  The main coils rest on the bottom (hull), but the long bitter ends are easily accessible right at the top.

We also installed quick release fasteners on each of our fenders, and hand them back there the same way, clipped onto the shock cords.

Dave Davis showed me his arrangement last weekend.  He installed two clothes hanging poles running fore and aft from the transom to the front to the helmsan's seat with wooden dowels sticking out, one on each side of the steering quadrant box.  He loops his racing lines for his spinnaker gear on them for easy accessibility.

It's a deep well back there, so anything that's at the bottom is a real pain to get to.  We took out outboard gas tank that used to live in the back and relocated it to the port locker, now that all those lines are aft.

Just a simple thought.  I store my fenders in the aft port locker.  Nothing complicated.  I feed the fenders down and tie the lines together so that they don't wonder while sailing.  It's simple and it's easy.

Luna Loca is an early '90 with a walk thru.  The port aft lazerette holds the propane locker, room for nothing else.  The Stbd is a catch all.  Water hoses, Shore power cord, fenders, extra dock lines, radar reflector, etc.  I tie a loop of light line around each item.  If I can't reach in and grab it, I use the boat hook to catch the line and pull it up.  The previous ideas make alot of sense.  More winter projects :)

Again, simple thoughts..I've attached a board vertically to the refrigeration compressor shelf in the aft starboard locker.  It extends above the shelf and is strengthened with two angle brackets.  Attached to the board are four large hooks for both fender lines and dock lines.  Maintenance to the refrigeration (not too often), requires removing the setup.  I also took care to still allow plenty of ventalation around the heat exchanger.  Secondly, to the underside of the lid (same locker), I attached some hooks and shock cord.  I use this to attach my emergency 5:1 block and tackle for man overboard.  I have not done anything to the port aft locker at this time, other than replace my fuel vent line with a clear one so that I get a 'nano-second' notice when my fuel tank is filled to the max.

When we first bought Jentine in 1992, I had a canvas bag made that is 5' deep and 3' on each side on the bottom and tapering to the opening at the hatch to make better use of this space.  We use it to store life vests, sailing harnesses and jacklines.  It has worked well over the years.

I made a bracket to attach my 13 pound danforth stern anchor to the underside  support of my refrigeration unit. I also coil 250 ft of rode tied to the same support.  I have 35 feet of anchor chain attached and lying in a plastic basket wedged in at the bottom.  It is easyily accessable.  On the other side I only store spare fenders so far.
