Glad you asked that.
I have been wondering for a long time why there are fleets everywhere except for SoCal.  What does it take?  And...  What are the benefits?
The sail, the play of its pulse so like our own lives: so thin and yet so full of life, so noiseless when it labors hardest, so noisy and impatient when least effective.

Thanks for your interest.

Our C34IA Vice Commodore has a "Fleet Formation Package" that includes a suggested constitution, tips and financial support for getting started.  http://www.c34.org/officers_top.html  Send the VC an email.

We're here to help.

I would be interested in getting some info on that too.
Should we contact the VC individually or as a group?

Mike, why don't those of you interested get together by email and work it out with Michael Shaner by email?

In L.A harbor area we have quite a few Cat 34's but most of the CAT34 owners belong to AC Fleet 24 (an all Catalina fleet.)

CAT 34 Fleet 9 has disappeared as a result and I still have the burgee fro that fleet in my closet.

Fleet 24 started as a CAt30 fleet but as we moved up in size we found a AC fleet would keep us all together.

AC fleet 24 has about 40 members and alumni that get together at least monthly for cruises and parties.  We a re a very active group.

Sometimes a AC type of association is a solution to organizing members of like boats.

San Diego also has an all Catalina Fleet.  According to the Mainsheet, the Commodore owns a C34.  May want to discuss this propostion with him.  James Harvey  email: commodore at sdcatalinaassoc.com

SD,
I was hoping either you or Kevin would jump in on this as I don't actually live in SD and am usually only there for long weekends(I live in the Phoenix area). My email is at the bottom of my header info.

BTW, I don't know just how much cruising you and Kevin have done so far but if you haven't already done it, try the short sail up to Mission Bay. There is an excellent anchorage at Mariners Cove just inside the jetty on the left. It's free and you don't have to check in with anyone but there is a time limit of 2 or 3 days. Also, you have to give Point Loma a wide birth because of the kelp.

There's also at least one other C34 owner that I know of at Silver Gate Yacht Club on Shelter Island.

Mike,
Thanks for the info on the free anchorage over in Mission Bay.  Have not done that yet but it's on the to do list to get ready to do Catalina Island.  I'll have to check out the anchorage on the charts.

Ralph,

I own Southern Cross, a 1990 C34 and keep it at Marina Cortez on Harbor Island.  We were members of the San Diego all Catalina fleet for a while, but due to conflicts with some of the other things we (my wife and I) do, we couldn't make many of the meetings.  They are hosted at the Silver Gate Yacht Club on Shelter Island.  I'm quite certain they'd be glad to welcome you.

Mariner's Cove (previously mentioned can be a fun weekend), but if you have a little more time Catalina is the place to go.  Holly and I usually slip the dock lines in San Diego on a Thursday night about 7:00pm we generally arrive at Avalon about 12 hours later.  We quite often continue up to Two Harbors.  You have the choice of going up either side of the island.

We stay Friday and Saturday and then get up early (5:30am-ish) and head back home - that way we get home in time to clean up the boat and get ready for work on Monday.  The trip up is motor sailing all the way, it's up wind and up current.  The return trip can be sailing tho' - we get the 'chute up and march on home!

There's a number of C34s in San Diego, I see them out all the time, but I guess they aren't too interested in a fleet or club ...

Cheers,
Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the note on Catalina.  Ann Marie and I have that on our bucket list.

Ralph : I believe the Stu can give you the names and addresses of C34s in your area that are IC34A members?  That might be a starting point.  a thought
