Freshwater and holding tank capacities in my 2000 MKII

I'm sorry to have to ask.  I've tried searching the site, and going through all my documentation. including my owner's manual.  Since I bought my Catalina 34 (new, in 2000) I have believed the capacities were as follows:  forward water tank, 23 gallons; aft water tank, 29 gallons; holding tank, 19 gallons.  I can't see to confirm or correct these numbers.  The more recent C34 brochures quote different numbers--slight small holding tank and larger freshwater tanks.  Can anyone clear this up for me?  Many thanks.

no 1417 :  From MY COPY of the MK II Owners Manual page 4.6.2.  Here is the following:
1. fwd water tank - 25 gal
2. aft water tank - 30 gal
3. holding tank - 18 gal
4. fuel tank - 25 gal
5. water heater - 6 gal

Call the factory and see if they changed for the 2000 production year?

I'm sure that any minor change shouldn't make an appreciable difference.  If you want to be exact the only other way is to empty the tanks and meter the fill capacity.

That would not be worth the trouble -- for me.  A thought

no. 1417,

The 3/7/03 version of the MK II Manual under Specifications says:

Holding Tank: 18 Gal.

And to find the manuals, use the C34 Tech wiki link at the top of the Message Board pages:  http://www.c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Manuals

Please remember that your C34 website includes much, much more than the Message Board.

The owner's manual says 18 gal holding tank. In fact it measures (check the dimensions) and holds (as tested by using buckets) no more than 14 US gals, 12 CDN gals.  So be careful about relying on owner-manual supplied figures!

Thanks for the helpful responses.  I did in fact find the 7th edition manual (from August 2002) in the Wiki, before I posted my question.  In fact I searched the entire site, and that was the closest I came to an answer. But I don't believe the 42 gallon figure for the aft tank.

My owner's manual does not seem to have the "Owner's Page" and "Data Sheet" that the 2002 version has.

Two reasons, neither compelling--first, I recall being told the aft tank held 29 gallons, when I bought the boat.  Second, my experience (admittedly very subjective) has been that both fore and aft tanks seem to require about the same time to fill, and when I discharge them on a cruise they seem to discharge just about equally fast.

Ron Hill's post has numbers that seem right to me.  But I can't prove it.

George, very interesting.  Our aft tank has a larger inlet hose than our starboard tank.  Perhaps that's why it takes one tank longer to fill than the other.  While it's better to only leave one tank on at a time, for filling up I use Ron's idea:  leave both valves open, and only fill through the larger aft tank inlet, which then fills both tanks, then close one of the valves depending on which tank you want to use.  Don't know if this'll work with your forward tank like it does for our starboard tank.

Our experience is that the aft tank lasts way longer than the starboard tank, 42 gallons vs. 23 or so is almost 2:1.

You can also add a "signature" to your posts so you don't have to repeat typing your name and boat info, that's in addition to the avatar and info there.

George : I'm not too sure that you can only fill the aft tank, as your fwd tank may not be lower than the aft tank - like in the MK I.  Not that familiar with the MK II water system ?   :donno:

Ron,

MK II tanks are not tied together.  Either can be filled/drained independently.  There is a manifold under the galley to switch full/empty tank to the pump.

Mystery solved, I think.  I found the missing page from my owner's manual.  61 gallons total freshwater capacity, 25 in forward tank.  Counting 6 gallons in the hot water tank, that makes the aft tank 30 gallons.  Per Ron Hill's post!

The 2003 owner's manual does indeed list larger capacities--apparently that's when they changed.

In 2003, did the capacities change (larger) or were the specifications in the earlier manuals (like my 2000 manual) incorrect?  I've never thought of my water tanks not being correct, as stated as 25 gal forward, 30 gal aft.  I've never attempted to measure them, but just took the manual at it's word.  However, 18 gallons for the holding tank has to be very wrong!

my 2001 Mk II has 25 gallons fwd and 45 gallons aft and about a 6 gallon water heater totaling 76 gallons which is what my surveyor reported when I bought it.  also an 18 gallon waste tank.
