Stu
When you come and visit this year and go to Candian waters remember you need to have your PCOC.
Or I could act as Captian for you. :D

Is that the new test for skippers?  In that case, guess you'll just have to sail up to Victoria or Nanaimo and pick me up!

Or Stu...just leave Canadian waters after 43 days. Then you won't need it.
Anyways our coast gaurd vessel goes north fishing in the summer so no worries:)

Hawk, do they have a provision for us old guys like the state of Washington does, if your too old you don't need it?  Also I don't think they will chase us south of the boarder types out, we keep the beverage stores in business refilling our wine lockers after leaving our ships stores at the boarder!  They love to see us come in to Ganges and Nanaimo.

Jack - Take the Washington online test and pay the $15 to get a lifetime card, even if you're exempt in Washington because we're so old and grandfathered in.

Operator Competency Requirements - Canada

The following is from the Transport Canada web site.

The Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations require that all operators of pleasure craft fitted with a motor have proof of competency and proof of age on board at all times.

The Regulations are being phased in as follows:

• All operators born after April 1, 1983 are required to have proof of competency since 1999.
• As of September 15, 2002, all operators of craft of less than 4 m (13'1") in length, including personal       watercraft, will be required to have proof of competency.
• As of September 15, 2009, all operators will be required to have proof of competency.

How the Regulations Apply to Non-Residents

The Regulations apply to non-residents:
• If they operate their pleasure craft in Canadian waters for more than 45 consecutive days or,
• If they operate a pleasure craft that is licensed or registered in Canada (including rented or chartered boats).
• The Regulations do not apply to non-residents who operate their pleasure craft in Canadian waters for less than 45 consecutive days. Please note that a proof of residence will be required on board at all times.

Acceptable Proof of Competency for Non-Residents

For non-residents, proof of competency can take one of three forms:
• A Canadian-issued pleasure craft operator card.
• A completed boat rental safety check-list (for power-driven rental boats).
• An operator card or equivalent that meets the requirements of their state or country.

For more information, consult the Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations.

Mike,
Sailing Certification is not enough as the requirement is in relation to any motorized vessel including a sailboat under sail that has an auxilary motor/engine. Although an equivalent operators certificate for motorized craft issued by your state appears to be acceptable..........provided that you tell the Canadian Coast Gaurd officer that even though you are an American you were secretly rooting for the Canadian hockey team in the Gold medal game at the Olympics here in Vancouver.
