Second Anchor Rode Divider in Anchor Well

I've seen several articles about 34's that have two anchor rodes.

My question is, do you have a seperator in the locker to keep the rodes from getting tangled and if so, what's it made of and how fastened?  A follow-up to that is how long are each of the rodes and chain?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve : Glad you asked!!  You must have the rodes seperated or you'll have a tangled MESS and neither will be usable !

I wrote up that topic (Separating the anchor well for separate rodes) in the Mainsheet tech notes back in the mid 1990's.  It may even be in Projects.  You can also see a picture of the separation in my Windless article (Mainsheet Nov 2007)
I used a 5/16" thick piece of Lexan as the separator which slides into two teak strips slots.  The teak strips are mounted for and aft.  They are screwed into place and caulked.  The Lexan divider as a small  inch slot cut out of the bottom side so it fits over the drain port.
The primary anchor Bruce33 (starboard) has 50ft of chain connected to 200ft of braided 1/2" rode.  The secondary anchor Danforth18 has 30ft of chain connected to 200ft of braided rode.

There's great information in those old Mainsheet tech note articles.  Stu has even taken the time to list the article topics for our web site, but you have to take time to read them !!

Instead of a separation in the anchor well, has anyone tried using one of those anchor bags you can buy and use that as a means to separate one anchor rode from another?  I was thinking about it and wondering if anyone has tried that approach.

Thanks!

Ron,

Thanks for the update!

I read your article this weekend in Mainsheet and it was very good!

Unfortunately, my Maxwell windlass doensn't have a chain gypsy so I haul the anchor up by hand after breaking it out.

I'll look up the article you wrote and use it!

Thanks again,

Steve

I used a 5 gallon bucket with holes in the bottom.  Also had a layer of practice golf balls, the plastic ones with all the holes in them, in the bottom.  A PO put them there I assume to keep the rode from clogging the drain.

My divider is a piece of painted plywood.  When goes bad, just stick in a new one.

I have the double door anchor locker. When I installed my windlass on top of the port hatch door I used a thick piece of hardwood as a backing plate and secured it against the aft wall of the anchor locker. ( an L shaped mount) Using that as a brace I also cut a piece of plywood to slide into the anchor well and divide it into halves. The windlass line falls down into its side and the second anchor and line is in the other side. Snags are easily romoved by reaching through one side to the other. works good so far.

Roc : To answer your question about an anchor bag.
Most of us that anchor with 2 anchors off the bow put the rode of 1 in a bag.  When you get ready to pull anchors it's easier to take the bag and go around and untwist, if the one of the rodes is contained in a bag.
