Stumbled across this web site on another sailing site I monitor, the "free guides" in the blue menu on the left side of the page look helpful.  I have looked at the first article on engine surveys, well written, easy to understand, think it will give you a good sense of an engine's status.  Might be a good site to add to your favorites.
