Rudder Post Movement

I have noticed that in a following sea or beam-to wave action that I get a fair amount of movement back and forth of the rudder post. I can actually see the rocking motion where the rudder post cap is bolted just forward of and below the helm seat (also where the emergency tiller fits in). Shanagolden is hull # 212 built in 1986. She also makes some creaking groaning sounds when the rocking motion occurs. I would appreciate anyone's comments on how to fix the situation. I contacted Edson and they said to check the rudder post bearing but they also said to check with Catalina.

shan : The side to side movement solution has been written up a number of times.  The bottom line is that you need to cut strips of mylar 3 & 5 mil drafting film and insert them from the top and bottom where the stainless column rides (under the emergency tiller cap)
For vertical movement you'll need another nylon bushing (or part of a bushing) between the E. tiller cap and the surface it rides on.  Hope this helps
