I think it was salt water getting into the mechanism.   Hopefully I'll never have another occasion to test that theory.

Nice pictures, really helps tell the story. 

The engine is a Kubota, Japanese company.  All the nuts and bolts should be metric except American made accessories like the Motorola Alt.  Except it too could be made overseas.
