Does anyone know the type of material the gaskets on a heat exchanger are made of? The ones on my exchanger are 1/8 inch thick and the ones I can buy are only 1/16. I was told to go to a autoparts store to find a sheet of exhaust gasket material and the person behind the desk asked what material. I was also told that I can use 1/8 inch neoprene.  Can I ?

I would think either thickness would work.  The material is your
basic rubber, not neoprene (no bubbles, open or closed).

1/16 inch is about what I have on mine.

There is also a soft rubber seal that goes over the bolt
on the inside of the cap.

Do a search on the word "Sendure" and look at the picture of the HX that I posted that has their phone number.  Call them and ask them.  It may be less expensive to just order two of them from Sendure.  You'll find it at this link:  http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,3744.0.html

Merv : As I posted in the Mainsheet Tech notes, I found that the Semdure replacement gaskets are MUCH thicker and last longer that the original OEM gaskets.
Great info in those old 1990s but still revelant)Tech Notes!!
