Fuel Lifter Pump. In-line Filter Leak

The fuel line on my 2005 MkII has a pesky leak in the in-line fuel filter into the fuel lift pump.  This issue was reported in an earlier post

and describes my situation perfectly.  There was much discussion around the need for the filter.  Seems to me to be a "belt and suspenders" reactive solution from Universal to protect themselves from owners who don't practice good hygiene with filtering upstream.

Any experience with MkII's without this filter?  It provides 2 additional couplings subject to leakage, plus having an inherently weak seam (where my leak occurred).  Will be a bit of a hassle to track down and install, and I'm not sure it is worth the effort.

My 2001 didn't come with an inline filter.  When the fuel pump went bad I bought one with the fuel pump, the fuel pump manufacture Faucet?sp recommended one, void warranty if not used.  After considering and looking at the installation, I didn't use it. Didn't think it did anything and didn't want to change it every year or so.  My boat my choice. Your boat your choice.

Julian : I've got the same filter on my new M25XPB engine.  As posted this is an added filter that Westerbeke put on engines 2003 and later.  It is a course filter (10-15microns?).  It is threaded on one end and hose clamped on the other.  

It's a Westerbeke filter so you need to go back to the dealer to get a replacement.  It's not listed in the Parts list of December 2001. So you'll need to talk to an Weaterbeke parts guy.

If you have a Racor 2 micron filter in the fuel line before the fuel gets to that filter and the fuel pump, here's what you can try if you don't want to buy a new Westerbeke filter:  
Unscrew that filter and use #2 Permatex on the threads and rescrew it back in.  Hopefully that will take care of the leak.

These are absolutely not Westerbeke parts they are Facet parts. This filter can be had at any NAPA or from places like Aircraft Spruce... If you want to pay $69.95 for a $5.00 part by all means buy it from Universal / Westerbeke otherwise get the part from Facet or any one of there hundreds of distributors...

The entire pump and filter can be bought as a kit for about $45.00, just not from Westerbeke at that price.....

Guys : Sorry, I didn't know it was a Facet part or like Mainsail said - go to any NAPA auto parts store and get a cheaper exact replacement (just like I wrote in the Mainsheet Tech notes years ago).

I also found the replacement in Canada online thru Aircraft Spruce.  Shipping is more than the part, however.  Will check if my local supplier for diesel systems has it in stock (long shot).  Otherwise, I may forego it completely.  My 10 micron Racor is only 12 inches away.

There are plenty of sources for these filters and are even some aftermarket versions. Any autoparts store that has Facet pumps can get you the filter which is part # 479735..
