a couple of ideas.

1st- When you're trying to get the studs out of coolant reservoir. Try filing down the threads square then using vise grips to unscrew them.

2nd-the short end of the threads on the new studs goes on the inside.
take one of the old nuts and tighten the new nut as far out as you can go on the threads then you can screw in the stud and finally unscrew the old nut and do the same thing on the next stud.

3rd-if you have a larger alternator than stock.  For example I have the battery shack 100 amp alternator. The extension arm hits the cooling fans.
I cut off a piece about 1/3 down from the two holes of the old extension arm.   I  installed it to the new extension arm this gave me the extra distance and angle I needed without hitting the cooling fans. Put a new 3/4 in stainless bolt and lock-washer and nut  through the first hole and connect it to the hole in the new extension arm then a 1" bolt through the other hole goes through to the alternator and on the back put a washer, lock-washer and nut.

Its very strong and works great.

Great ideas, very pertinent to almost any stud removal process.  Thanks a lot.

For those who have M25 engines and aren't sure of their alternator brackets, please read:  http://www.c34ia.org/projects/projects-alt-bracket.html

I'm guessing with the recent conversion of many older boats to third, fourth and now fifth owners, it's not a bad idea to check out a "new-to-you" boat to make sure the bracket's been upgraded.
