I just gutted my existing alcohol stove. Threw out all the old parts...I'm done with alcohol!  I want to replace the stove top[ with a small gas grill/ griddle. I figure a small self contained unit will do. I won't have to get involved with propane tanks, as I plan on using the little coleman type tank that i use on the BBQ. I'm saving the stainless shell so the gimbal setup still remains, but plan on fabricating the stove from off the shelf parts. If I'm lucky, I'll find a unit that will fit right inside. Approx 12x18. I'm excited about the new idea. Any experience with this type of re-fit? I'm not planning on using the oven for now, just want to be able to make coffee or eggs.

I've converted two stoves to propane, an alcohol stove and a kerosene stove.  On the alcohol stove, I removed the pressure tank and ran a copper tube from a coleman propane cannister, that was secured in the cabinet under the stove, to the two lines that fed the alcohol to the whatchamacallits.  I took the little covers off the burners and started drilling additional air holes until the flame burned blue (about twice as many air holes as the stock alcohol burner)  The hard part was finding an adjustable regulator that goes on top of the portable propane bottle, but I found one at a camping supply store that fit right on top of the coleman cannister and was labled with three settings, low, medium and high.  Of course I was a little paranoid about have the propane cannister inside the boat which would have given our insurance company and the Coast Guard fits, but we monitored it and disconnected the cannister any time it was unattended.  It worked good.  Got about a week per cannister before I started making coffee each day.  The same procedure worked on the kerosene stove too, which was always flaring up and sooting up the cabin top of the old boat.

We have never used our galley stove. Instead, I bought a Glowmate Butane Stove at West Marine/BoatUS and keep it on the cutting board top. We use it to cook everything. It has an automatic igniter and precise flame control and puts out a lot of heat immediately. It weighs only 8 lbs and can be used in the galley, at the table, in the cockpit, on deck, or on the beach. Along with the Force 10 propane barbecue grill hung off the stern, we are pretty well set in the cooking category. Get the stainless model - the black enamel ones will rust in the marine environment.

Ok, mike thanks, I'm registered. I like your idea, it's simple. I'm hoping to fit the stove into my existing stainless unit. I just need to find one that can be fitted into the spot where the old stove top was. I'll use the oven for storage for now. what are the dimensions of your grill? I have a space thats 14x19 1/2 max.

Its listed in all the marine discount store catalogs (West, BoatUS, Defender, etc). The  stainless model I have is 11 5/8" W x 4" H x 13 5/8" long Model GM 1800 for $79.99. Restaurants use them for table-side cooking. There are a couple of accessories, if I remember correctly. The non-stainless version is cheaper, but it rusts. You may have a problem with the 4" H dimension if you want to store it under the cutting board top. Maybe it will fit in the oven. I just have it sitting on top of the cutting board. If you need a two-burner stove, then just buy another one!

OK, finished for now, completely gutted and threw out guts of old alcohol stove and oven. cleaned the shell and installed a marine grade plywood shelf where the oven was with a small bar to keep stuff inside (great spot for beverage storage). bought a small single burner stove from west marine (butane). The stove rests on top, under the cutting board. beautiful, simple, short term solution. Next year I'll probably upgrade to new propoane oven/stove.
