Until this post I didn't realise that there was anything other than single lever operation!!!

Lots of ways to do the same thing.  Because Shamrock is different from most of my friends boats I wrote up a detailed start-up and motor operating instructions.  Sort of a just in case thing. 
Remember when I was new to boating one of the old timers with a two year old pride and joy 31 Catalina couldn't start it at launch.  After a couple of days of trouble shooting he paid to have his boat towed to his slip across the bay.  Shortly after he realized that turning the key past on (glow plug position) wasn't the start, a separate button is the start.  Embarrassing and costly.

Keel : Not to discourage you, but I've watched more power boaters with a similar single throttle/shifter lever sitting at the dock - constantly have to have that mechanism readjusted so it operated properly.   :cry4`
I hope you have an improved version that's more reliable!!
