With a tall rig and Fin keel, Mystics performance is
very impresssive. If you add folding prop, performance genoa and spinniker
you will be competitive in club and long distance racing. We're having
lots fun with Mystic, the C34 is the perfect boat for our type of
sailing and would recommend Catalina to any or all Great Lakes cruisers. |

Terrific surveyor in BC. Repairing handrail
bolthole leaks and voids (thanks largely to posts by others). |
| How Boat Was Named |
Our sharing group participated in a naming
competition by email that was tighter than a Texas senate race, complete
with block voting, votes held until the ballots closed, and rotten
boroughs. After 7 ballots, "Grace Note" was lading over
"Makani" by a nose...until the losing competitors demonstrated
that over the radio "Grace Note" sounds like "Gray
Snot". "Hali", an early contender, was then nominated
from the floor and acclaimed at our first owners' lunch. The Scots
in the group liked that the "H" and the "i" from
the old name ("New Horizons") could be salvaged for "Hali".
It was said that "Hali" means "ocean" in Hawaiian. |
| Comments |
C34.org, our surveyor's appreciation of the construction
and hull accessibility of the C34, her lines and accommodation, and
our group's long association were big factors in buying Hali. In the
1st month of ownership, information on the website ("hard starting",
"pedestal table") and posted in response to questions ("Voids(?)
adjacent to handrail bolt holes") have saved time and made owning
Hali more pleasant. |

I have been an avid power boater for many years.
I purchased a Catalina Capri-16 as a learn to sail boat in 1992.
After the Maiden voyage I was hooked. I have looked forward
to possibly a Catalina 30 for a number of years.I purchased the Catalina
34MKII rather than going the powerboat route of the 28 then the 30
then the 32, etc. I learned my lesson with other boats.
Look hard, study the options and how the boat will actually be used.
Not how you "dream" it will be used. My dealer Eastern Yacht
Sales in Hingham, MA is great. They knew of my limitations and
also my lack of experience and helped me order, what I think, was
the perfect boat for my family. I can sail it alone and it handles
great. |

Second Wind is a C34 Mk II. It has the tall rig
with two sets of reef points and Dutchman batt cars to go along with
the Dutchman flaking system, 150% genoa, and a wing keel. The
engine is the Universal M35 (30 hp, 4 cylinder). It has the
3 blade cruising prop (15x9, I think), cockpit cushions, dodger, bimini
with bridge, microwave oven, macerator (just in case), and the Autohelm
speed, depth, and wind speed & direction. The boat came
with a rope only windlass. I carry the Max 16 (36#) anchor with
200 feet of rope and 3 feet of chain as my main anchor. The
short length of chain allows me to fully use the windlass. As
a second anchor, stowed in the anchor locker, I carry T-2500 (13#)
hi-tensile deep-set Danforth with 200 feet of line and 6 feet of chain.

This 34 mkII is our second Catalina. The first one was
a Catalina 28 mkII (build 1995), we sailed about two years noth of
Holland, on the Waddenzee and on the Noordzee (Northsea) in the coastal
areas. The difference in sailing between the Catalina 28 and the Catalina
34 mkII was much bigger than we had expected. Although we had a lot
of small problems, we had a very nice voyage to England. Crossing
the Channel with a wind force 7, the boat felt sturdy and safe.
