Ron Hill - Who Made The Galley Faucet In 1987?
« on: April 13, 2018, 02:42:40 PM »

Ron, you seem to know all of these historical types of details so thought I'd ask.

My galley faucet has a small leak. I thought it was a Scandvik product, so sent a photo of the faucet and called Scandvik this morning. The gentleman I spoke with said it wasn't a Scandvik product, and he wasn't sure what Catalina used back then.

Do you know who the galley faucet supplier was in 1987? Thanks for the help.

Jon : GROHE made the galley faucets for 1986 thru (at least) 1991.  Think they were also used in many subsequent years till - ?
They were in Bloomingdale Ill. the last time I checked.
Give them a call @ (630) 582-7711 - the last time I talked to them.

Good Luck!

Thanks Ron. I’ll call the number Monday.

Noah, I’m hoping to be able to repair my original. Access to remove and replace the faucet I have is horrible so will either have to cut a access hole in the back of the seat above the batteries like some have done or pull the sink. As a fallback I’ll pick up some washers from HD tomorrow. Hopefully one will fit.

Get out your digital caliper!

Looks as though newer models have gone to sealless ceramic cartridges instead of like your seals.
It would be too lucky if the new carts also fit the old models.

PS Your other thingamabob will ship monday.

When I replumbed the fresh water system, I purchased a new faucet from Amazon.

Here's my blog post, has pics of the faucet. http://www.sailingeximius.com/2018/01/whole-boat-filter.html

Paul

You do such nice work. And quality write-ups!

Have you thought about throwing a link to each in the appropriate sections of the wiki so more see your work?  And on the owners’ project page?

Paul, I agree.  How about submitting some to our Tech Editor, John Nixon, for publication in Mainsheet?  That way YOU can write about an upcoming project... 8)

I’m curious about the brand of faucet, or the model.  Looks great!

Thanks for the compliments.

Here's the link to the faucet on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012SV6DJA

Paul, What did you do with the drawers that used to be there?

The drinking water filter system (Particulate, Carbon, UV) would not fit behind the drawers, but it seemed the best location. So I cut the back of the drawer cabinet and the two drawers by a couple of inches.

The only downside to the smaller drawer was that my bread knife would not fit, so I ground off 1/4" from the tip of the knife. Then promptly lost the knife (probably in the trash) so purchased a new knife that was shorter :)

Nice job Paul.

Many thanks again Ron.

For at least the MK 1 vintage C34, the galley faucet is a Grohe product. The Grohe name is on the back side of the base of the faucet.

Instead of calling 1-630-582-7711, there is a toll free number 1-800-444-7643 to contact Grohe.

The service rep thought it used to be called Classic 2, and is now called Costa S single hole kitchen faucet PN 31074001 for $199 plus shipping. I found a very close match to the original online called Costa Trend PN 31072000 for ~ $82 plus shipping. It isn’t sold in the US, but it is available on Amazon UK.

Tempting to buy new, but I really don't want to tear everything apart. Fortunately the original style replacement cartridge PN 07146000 is still available. A local plumbing outfit had two in stock for $15.30 each. If you’re not in a hurry, Amazon had them for ~$9 each plus shipping. Easy fix, and I have a spare if the cold water starts leaking.

There are new versions of the replacement cartridge with ceramic insides for ~$30 each. The Grohe PN’s for those are -
PN 45882000 for “Hot” water.
PN 45883000 for “Cold” water.

A couple photos attached.

Jon

The ceramic cartridges fit the old (non-ceramic version) body?
The sealing would be different (compression washer against the seat vs a rotating ceramic ) -- maybe they engineered them to be backward compatible?
