GPS Inside the Cabin

Recently I purchased a BU-353 usb gps puck.  I was a bit disappointed to find out it would not hold reception very well inside the cabin at the nav station where my 5 year old garmin handheld does quite well.  I'd prefer to keep the Garmin as a handheld device.  Does anyone have experience with USB GPS that will work inside the cabin?

Thanks

That puck is the "standard" of the dongle industry and is very good.  IIRC, it has a pretty long USB cord.  While I've had no trouble with signals when running inside the cabin, since you do, just stick it up outside under the dodger.

You should also remove the magnet.  Start here and go to the next page, too.

Stu:
Thanks for the input.  I'm surpised to hear yours does work in the cabin.  Maybe you have the "S4" model?  The cord is not long enough to reach outside from the nav table and I don't want to drill any holes.

Thought the magnet was not a great feature also.

I'm pretty sure it's just a simple USB cord, probably can find a longer one at Radio Shack or online.  Maybe this place has them, just read about it in the newspaper:

Stu, great site.  The 6' USB male to female should add sufficient length to route under the dodger. :clap

Like Stu, I have used the BU-353 for four years by just setting it on the chart table behind my iBook Mac and have never had a problem with reception. If fact, it gets reception faster than my Garmin 76csx handheld which is mounted behind my computer. You may have a defective unit.

Ok, I'll be the volunteer dummie; what is BU-353 and what do you use it for? Is this a wireless router for GPS?

thanks,

HI

The BU-353 is a gps receiver that you connect to your laptop, and with a NAvigation software you can have a like a chartplotter.
