Thanks Everyone for your input.
I think I'll try the Kicker pad from Defender. I saw it in the catalogue but thought it was the same one WM has and it wouldn't work since it was a straight 90 degrees(already tried it)and I'm sure it will look cleaner than my idea of a 2 X 12 with U-bolts

Are you saying to bolt the two pieces together then drill lengthwise along the seam of the sandwich to make the channels for the rail tubes then take them apart to mount on the rails?

Since I live in Phoenix and my boat is in San Diego I'm hoping someone is close by their boat and can tell me the distance from the top rail to the center rail on the stern rail. I'm trying to build an outboard motor bracket. I'm considering using common 2 x 10 or 2 x12 lumber and some U bolts to mount it on the rail. Any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks,
Mike

Main Message Board / Re: Mast Wiring Question

Ron, I think Mike was also asking if there is/are a conduit/conduits in the Catalina masts like the Irwin he was working on. I found a pull cord at the base of mine(keel steped)but have not been up the mast yet nor have I un-stepped the mast. I assume that you could also fish the wires down if you clinb the mast.

I know that Catalina says you can use either Ford AFT or GM Dexron II fluid as long as you don't mix them but what if you don't know whats in there now. Would you need to flush the Trans to make sure you don't get a mix? Is there a preference of one over the other. Thanks.

Main Message Board / Bruce Anchor Question
June 01, 2006, 11:06:41 AM
I have a Bruce Anchor on my bow roller and it is stamped with "Bruce 10kg". I figured out that 10kg = about 22 lbs. So, does that mean I have a Bruce 22? Has anyone else seen this?

The water heater on my '89 is an Atwood model EHM6-SM. I just ordered a new one on line from DuckTec for $298.89 with free shipping. It is rated at 1400 watts.

In changing the oil is there a problem with taking out the drain plug? It should be the same as the drain plug on my car or am I missing something. It looks like I have room to get at the plug but the space is a little narrow to get a collection pan in there but I think I can find something to fit. Are the drain hoses available from Catalina and do they just take the place of the plug?

I guess I'll have to wait until I can find someone to go up the mast for me to find out about the anchor lght. Someone sugested I offer a case of beer, well I'll go one better. I have a bottle of Callwood Spiced Rum from Tortola BVI. If your near San Diego, stop by and visit.
As for the foot pump, I've decided I really don't need to pump salt water so I've abandoned putting in the footpump that sticks through the cabinet and have installed the one inside the drop down door and connected it so that it pumps the ice box water out through the spout at the sink. That way I don't have to worry about a through hull connection.

Ron, I use Mobil 1 in my car so I think I'll try it in the boat. Am I missing something on the draining explanation? Why would you have to pump the oil out if you had a drain hose? Wouldn't it drain out by gravity as it would if you used a drain plug? It wousd seem that a drain hose is just a convenient extension of the drain plug.

I am getting ready to change the oil on my Cat 34's  m25xp for the first time since I bought it. I see that the manual recomends a 30w or 10w-40 with a CF,CF-4 or CG-4 designation. Anyone have a favorite brand? I see Shell Rotella 15w-40 as well as Castrol DELO 15w-40 and Valvoline Premium blue diesel.I know that the CF designation is critical but how about the weight? Ron has talked about Mobol 1 Synthetic oil but would there be any problems using this on an engine with high hours on it (3000). Also everyone seems to pump the oil out of the dipstick hole. Is there anything wrong with just using the drain plug? I know some boats have drain hoses attached to the drain plug fitting(mine doesn't)is this a good idea?

Thanks,
Mike

Terry, I agree with Ted, You really need to get an electrician involved. From your discription it sounds like the dock wiring is good and your boat wiring is reversed since another source of power(your generator)shows a reverse too! Is the boat new?If you are coming from another marina, that wiring may have been reversed to wrongly correct the situation.Proceed cautiously!
Good Luck,

Thanks Ron and all of you that responded. As far as the rust on the waterheater, looks like the sink has actually rusted through somehow! When I look up at the sink from where the waterheater is I can see daylight through the bottom of the sink,so it looks like I'll be replacing the sink and faucet. Is Catalina the best source? As far as the footpump, the old one that the PO removed was to the left of the dropdown door and it stuck through the cabinet to the outside. He claims he removed it because he kept tripping on it. Now I'm wondering if I'll feel the same way when I re-install it. Dod you actually have two footpumps and was the other one inside the dropdown. Do you think it would be feasable to use a "Y" valve to switch between the salt water and the ice box to pump it into the sink?
I just got a note from my insurance company about some items found on the survey when I bought the boat and they are wanting me to correct a non-working anchor light. Is this really a legal requirement? I would think as long as you use SOME kind of anchor light(a portable or hanging type)you shouldn't be required to have a mast head light. Are they standard equipment on a C34? I can't tell if there's one up there or not.

Thanks all,
Mike

Hi, we are new members of the C34 association and have just purchased #940 a '89 C34. At the time of purchase I didn't know it was a tall rig and didn't find out untill I pulled up the boat in your data base. Is there anything special I need to know about the "Tall Rig" other than it having a bigger mast and sails. Also the previous owner took out the foot pump and under the sink I have found an unused hose going to a through hull, nothing connected to the ice box drain. and a hose going to the little spout in the center of the sink. Is the foot pump for theĀ  salt water hose or the ice box drain ot could I use it for both with a "Y" valve. I have since bought a new foot pump from Catalina but don't know what it was connected to. The water heater works good but looks nasty from rust. If I replace it will it fit through the door opening or will I have to take off the door frame? Any help is appreciated
