In San Diego, the SDCatA fleet races usually have 4 or more C36 boats and 3 Cat 34 boats. The racing is very close. A couple of the C36s are tall rigs and do better in the light air. In other conditions, the C34s tend to do as well. It's very close racing, both handicap and for line honors. Last year a C34 won the Club overall trophy. If you have enough water, the fin keel is better performing on either boat. This fleet started as a C30 fleet but there is little C30 participation now and it has become an All Catalina Asso.

For entertaining at the dock, the C36 wins easily. It has a better salon and the MkIIs have a great cockpit. My wife doesn't like the C36 companion way stairs ending in the galley and I don't like the head forward but these are minor issues. For sailing or sleeping, I prefer the C34. Just one opinion. Either will put a grin on your face and they are pretty much a toss up on the race course.

Main Message Board / Re: Tracks on Toe Rails

I was surprised to see activity on this old thread I started. I think it's clear that Dave thru bolted the track except for a couple of locations where he could not reach the backside. I also have a Mk I, 1990, and I convinced myself I didn't want to risk having many places where I could not reach and would have to screw into the glass. I have made work a couple of carefully placed padeyes on the deck and use both a cruising and a poled spinnaker. But, I still want a track! Since I first asked the question, I've heard from two people who have added tracks. I think access to each boat may be a little different and some people are just determined to do the impossible. Good luck.

Main Message Board / Traveler jam cleat relocation

Bruce,
When I upgraded my traveler, Guido put put rollers instead of cam cleats on the brackets so that I could mount the cleats on the cabin top inside the doger. I would like to have cleats at both positions now since I remove the doger for racing and the forward position is more convinent from the pit. I'll be in Catalina next week for JazzTrax but I'll try to post some pictures when I get back.

Correction. San Diego Catalina Association Meeting is the first Wednesday of each month at SGYC.

I would be glad to show you my setup and discuss local sources. Also, please visit our SDCatA meeting at SGYC the 1st tursday at 7 PM each month. We need you for the new C34 fleet. I bought my pole new at Minneys for $295. My first spinaker cost about $600 from National Sail Warehouse. I estimate rigging costs at $300.

You will need to remove the period from the previous link. It should be: http://www.nosa.org/05_races-lx.html

Here's a link to the race site: http://www.nosa.org/05_races-lx.html. This was the 58th annual race and is a big event on the west coast. I'd hoped to beat Pywacket but they corrected 8 minutes ahead - and they were the first boat to finish. At least we beat Genuine Risk. We had a great time but I really dislike getting beat by C320s and those darn Maxis - but we'll get back at them soon!

Thought this might be of some interest due to the number of Cat34s in PHRF class J. Sorry for the formatting. Couldn't seem to keep the columns. Class J started at 13:10 on 4/22/05 (Friday). No bragging rights for me this year. I've done this for 10 years and this is my 6th race as owner of SchatzSea. Best we have finished is a 3rd in the Cruising Class several years ago. There were 465 entries and 379 finishers. (unofficial numbers). This has been billed as the largest international yacht race.

Although this link doesn't answer the M-35B question, it is an interesting history and gives the orgin of the M-35 engine.

Main Message Board / Spinnaker dimensions
June 13, 2004, 11:42:08 AM
Brad,

There are 2 parts to this answer: 1) C34 national class rules and 2)PHRF-SD rules.

C34 class rules prohibits assymetricals and is as follows (http://www.c34.org/rules.html):

4.11.4 SPINNAKER
4.11.4.1 The host fleet may specify or prohibit use of spinnakers.
4.11.4.2 When permitted, the spinnaker shall be a three-cornered sail symmetrical about its
centerline with a maximum girth of 24 feet 4 inches. A handicap may be specified
by the host fleet based on performance data.

San Diego PHRF
(http://www.phrfsandiego.org/PHRFSD2004/ASails2004.htm)is basically the same as PHRF SoCal and states the following:

SAILS Headsail LP shall not exceed 1.55 x J
Symmetrical Spinnaker SL shall not exceed .95 times the square root of (I² + J²)
Symmetrical Spinnaker SMW shall not exceed 1.8 x J
Asymmetrical Spinnaker SLU shall not exceed 1.03 (the 1.15 is only for boats designed for asymmetrical chutes) times the square root of (Ic² + Jc²)
Asymmetrical Spinnaker SF shall not exceed 1.8 x Jc
Asymmetrical Spinnaker ASMG shall not exceed 1.8 x Jc
Asymmetrical Spinnaker ASMG/SF ratio shall be equal to or greater than 0.75
POLES Spinnaker pole shall not exceed 100% of J. The parameters for Spinnaker Pole measurement are the same as SPL (Appendex A, Section 1.0).
Extended “bow pole” (BPL) shall not exceed original manufacturer’s designed length.
Whisker pole maximum length shall not exceed 1.4 x J.
Boats racing in a designated Non-Spinnaker race may use a whisker pole. Adjustable length whisker poles shall have a 2-inch contrasting band indicating maximum allowable length. When in normal use, these poles shall not be extended beyond their maximum allowable length, and shall be attached to any point on the mast.

In summary:

If you have a standard rig C34 then the I = 44, J = 13.5 and SL = 43.72(max)and SMW = 24.3(max)

You can carry both a symetrical and a assymetical in SoCal but the asso must be measured using the Jc dimensions and must be on the certificate. In addition, make the SMW 24.3 to be safe.

I'm on the PHRF San Diego board so if I can help, feel free to contact me. Hope this helps.

Main Message Board / Drainage on deck
January 15, 2004, 07:01:38 AM
Jeff & Cindy,

My 1990 #1031 has a drain hole at the stanchion so it can't have water on the deck unless the hole is plugged. The 1996 doesn't have the drain hole. I suspect that your standing water is farther aft of the stanchion.

Main Message Board / Vents on Mark 2
January 15, 2004, 07:07:07 AM
The 1996 C34 Mk2 I'm looking at doesn't have air vents in the cabin like the Mk 1. Is this a problem and have vents been added to other Mk2s either by owners or the factory?

I have 2 Vetus vents in the salon and one in the aft cabin of my 1990. I think this was standard for 1990.

Thanks,
Bill

Main Message Board / HALYARDS
April 11, 2003, 07:30:58 AM
Bob,
I replaced my main and one jib halyard in the last 12 months because of new sails and streach in both old halyards. I first bought Stayset-X for the main. It is stiff and the cover seems to be rapidly getting fuzzy but there is no streach now on the main. I replaced the jib halyard with XLS Extra. It is more flexible and seems to have a much better cover. Again, there is no apparent streach. I'll use the XLS Extra in the future although it cost a little more than the Stayset-X. These are both on the low end of the cost scale for low streach (non-poly core) materials.
