hi, my boat was peeing yesterday and is not today.  i wanted to try to fix it myself but i can't figure out how to get the plastic cover off what i believe to be the river water intake with metal mesh filter.  i tried, with my hand so i don't break anything, twisting it left and right and straight off.  nothing.  it's plastic so i don't want to use channel locks on it.  what is the secret procedure so i can then see if my river water engine coolant intake is clogged and fix her peeing issue myself?  and i assume the pee, coming out of the engine, which i so dutifully look for each time i start up the engine, is river (or not coolant) water, correct? i could not find a drawing in the owner's manual for how all the hoses run, for coolant and river water.  is it there that i missed or can someone send it?

thanks

Main Message Board / rigging of the boom lift
July 03, 2022, 03:43:19 PM
i have hull 99, 1986 and it should be the original rigging set up but something went wrong, in the past year, and i don't know what.  My boom lift is in the way of the main, when it's up.  I don't take the boom off, for winter but somewhere, the rigging is wrong.  it's the same main, and same rigging, for the past 5 years.  The wire of the boom lift is completely in the way of the main, even when fully loosened but on and i don't want it shredded my main sail.  I have pictures and I'm really really frustrated.  I looked in the manual but it's unclear what is wrong.  does anyone else have a 1986 who can help me with what happened to my rigging?

thanks

2 questions, does your traveler, from Guido (RIP) from Gaurhauer, does it slide all the way to the edges? I rebed mine (it's cabin top, i'm 1986 hull #99) and someone sailing my boat said the traveler should, well, travel, the whole length of the cabin top riser, but when I rebed it, I have 3 filled in screw holes, on each side, keeping the traveler from going all the way to the edge.  I don't race my boat but I can't see how water wouldn't get into the traveler /cabin top if the screws were out.  what am i missing?

secondly, the roller furler line on my harken drum was too tight against the inside/underside of the drum, and rubbing against the line.  I loosened it, which seemed to help the chafing but i was thinking of re-running it out of the drum to a spring loaded pulpit block (that I don't yet have), connected on the starboard pulpit.  anyone else done this before?   i want to lower (and control) the line coming out of the drum.

thanks

Main Message Board / pin for window
August 08, 2021, 02:15:13 PM
i can't seem to post the picture here since it's too big for the site, but I'm looking for a picture/measurements of the silver pin that connects the screw with white knob (catalina 1986) for the opening port , starboard side, vberth.  i have a cotter pin in and that's fine but i'd like to get an actual pin and i don't want to hammer against the rest of the windows since the hanging part, with the pin, is plastic and i don't want to break anything.  thank you

Main Message Board / plexiglass in the ice box
April 26, 2021, 06:13:15 AM
i have a 1986 c34 and I'm completely at a loss about the plexiglass in the ice box. I *think* i put the top piece somewhere, can't find it, and can't remember how the other pieces go together (and I'm not even certain I lost the top piece, if there was one). Is there a drawing of the sizes of the pieces and how they go together?

thank you

hi all, i took my floorboards off, last year, sealed the underside, since they were the raw teak/holly, and then didn't do anything with them.  does anyone have a drawing of the boards, for a 1986 so when i give them to the wood worker, i can label them based on a map? if not, i'll bring them back to the boat, put them on, and make my own map.

Main Message Board / new fixed radio?
October 21, 2020, 09:55:18 AM
hi all, my fixed marine radio is really old and pretty much doesn't work .  someone also mounted a antenna on the port side, cabintop which i could never use because every time i tacked the jib, it would get hung up on it.  and that hole leaks.  what, for not ocean travel, but just inner lake travel, would you recommend and as far as I know, there is no network, on the boat, to connect to.

Main Message Board / stored bow down
November 16, 2019, 06:40:58 AM
i'm not certain if my boat is backwards or just bow down, in the cradle but it's not right.  this is the cradle the boat came with, from Catalina (which I just got back, after years, from a marina in Canada) but the yard I took it to, for storage, is all new people (new ownership after a bankruptcy) and the bow is down.  how much damage could this cause my boat?  i did put the cover on, got all the ice and water out of the cockpit, beforehand, and took a turkey baster to the front of the bilge, and took out the bilge plug out.  how much possible damage could the boat, being bow down and/or backwards in the cradle, be looking at?

Main Message Board / stupid stanchion question
October 24, 2019, 05:18:11 AM
it seems the yard bent 90 degrees my mid ship starboard stanchion, in setting my boat.  i can't remember if it's vented or not (and i can't get there until tonight to look).  if it's vented, on hull 99, 1986, what is it vented to?  it's just over the galley.  thanks

Main Message Board / water in bilge
October 08, 2019, 12:29:14 PM
from the PO, my 1986 hull 99 C34 has always had water in the bilge (and it gets gunky when I don't get the boat out).  I can't tell where it's coming in from.  i did blow up the aft water bladder so i know it's not that. could it be coming in from the farthest after lazerette in the cock pit?

August 27, 2019, 02:12:40 PM
i can't find if i posted about this before or no, so apologies in advance.  the white cover over the sheet metal screw, as pictured below, for my hull 99, 1986 catalina 34, sheered right off.  Do i need to replace the whole arm mechanism or is there another way, so i can hold that hatch up?

Main Message Board / water coming in the traveler
April 27, 2019, 01:18:48 PM
if you look at the picture, that is water coming out of the structure the traveler sits on top of.  I never could figure out where water was coming in and when we ground some of the gel coat for stress cracks, that water came pouring out.  dug it out to fiberglass and then put the air compressor on one of the screw holes of the traveler and sent water pouring out.  so i apparently have to take the entire traveler off and rebed it.  what do I use for the rebedding so water doesn't go in the screw holes (which have screws in them) and into the headliner?  thanks

Main Message Board / steering wheel removed
March 17, 2019, 07:48:26 AM
i came to my boat, at her winter storage, to find the steering wheel removed.  i don't know by whom or what. pictures (3) at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10215801050431617&set=pcb.10215801052151660&type=3&theater.  i found the wheel, the screw cover, and a metal "key" on the cockpit floor.  there seems to be two slots for the key on the stem, where do i put it?

i have a 1986 hull 99 and thank you to Stu for the writeup about shelving, in the nav station, hanging locker.  now I have 2 more questions, is it supposed to drain into the bilge, because mine doesn't.  there's the big black hose that goes from the head to the holding tank and no other holes to drain.  and secondly, there was a build up of black caked something yet there is no smell.  I assume that means that hose is "weeping"?  i scrubbed the hell out of the floor yesterday so i'll see, with just sitting in the well and with sailing, what happens.

Main Message Board / water for the head?
July 01, 2018, 05:57:16 AM
hull 99 1986, i can't remember what i do to get water into the head.  the boat was winterized so all i get is a small amount of pink coming out but no water.  what do i need to open to get water flowing into the toilet?  thanks

btw, i assume this means i don't have the engine water right either.  i did open what i thought was the seacock - the valve is in line with the hose.  i remember there was 3 things to open.  thanks

if you've done anything to improve the storage of your nav station hanging locker, like putting shelving in or something, can you post pictures?  i'd finally like to check that off my "todo" list and it's not as easy, at first glance, since , at least on my hanging locker there is 12 inches opening but 15 inches, in the cavern, and completely weirdly shaped.

Main Message Board / replacing tall vetus cowl
January 22, 2018, 03:46:43 PM
one of my vetus fresh air cowls left the boat so i wanted to replace both, since the other one is probably original, from 1986, and looks weathered.  i've put in pictures, the opening is 6 inches, for the cowl and 4 inches for the base.  is there any reason not to go with a cheaper and shorter cowl, which is also 4 inches in opening?  it seems i could replace both at 100 each or replace them with shorter ones for 35 each.  I do not live on the boat nor go for more than day sails so i'm not too worried about fresh air exchange.

Main Message Board / pokey engine/transmission?
July 20, 2017, 07:55:52 AM
i have hull 99, 1986 and last night was the first time i took her out, from the dock, this year. in forward, she was really slow and the engine was pegged at 3200 rpm, for going really slowly.  i put her in reverse, in case there were weeds, didn't see anything coming off, went back into forward and for probably 3-5 minutes, the engine remained pegged then it slowly backed off the rpm, with the same amount of throttle.  turned off the boat, sailed for a few hours, turned her back on, and it was sluggish again with high rpm, going forward.  if the weather holds, I'm going to dive the prop tonight but what else could this be?

April 21, 2017, 07:17:47 AM
below is an image of medium grit rubbing compound, on my blue paint, that a friend decided to do, to show me how dirty my boat is and how oxidized the paint is.  the problem is, so much blue came off that it gummed up the buffer.  I bought
Star brite Premium Cleaner Wax with PTEF to use on my boat, before he did this but i realize i should clean the boat, then use the buffer so as to not gum it up.  is the Cleaner/wax okay to use, before the buffing compound or should i use something else, in this special case?

i have hull 99, c34, 1986 and my deadheads are shot.  scratched, chipped, leaking. I've rebed one but I've decided I want all new (and much darker).  catalina yachts, *IF* they can find the patterns, are $125 a piece.  I don't know what the local place will charge but the disadvantage of using local is the ports have to be out for 3 weeks, at least, while they duplicate them which means my boat will be open.  does anyone else know if anyone who had the patterns for the deadheads so i can buy (and install) them at once?

Main Message Board / are my water tanks reversed?
September 28, 2015, 04:49:55 PM
c34, 1986, hull 99.  according the drawing, from catalina, my inside (yellow lever) should be the front (smaller, hard) tank and my outside (white, twist, round valve) should be after (soft bladder/40 gallons i think), but it seems, from trying to winterize tonight, that is reversed.  can someone lend an idea?  also, when you winterize your water system, do you fully drain the water out of the tanks, then put in a gallon of pink each tank, run, one at a time until pink comes out?  my friend seemed to think i should keep some water in my tanks then put pink in, and i disagreed.

Main Message Board / confused on coolent reservoir
July 17, 2015, 09:43:19 AM
my 1986 c34 hull 99 did not come with a coolent reservoir and after my impeller blew itself apart, my mechanic said i needed one.  dutifully paid for him to hang one off the door, in the head.  he said to keep it filled so I did. it somehow managed to empty itself, over the winter, while the boat was 10 feet in the air. new mechanic says it's not ingress, it's for egress - it is set up as an overflow for when the engine is running and if i fill it, it will be too much and overflow, hence the antifreeze all over the floor.  any idea how i tell who is right?

Main Message Board / (not) good vibrations
July 13, 2015, 01:39:24 PM
i have a c34, 1986, hull 99.  i had a new shaft put on a few years ago, and the prop straightened.  i ran her aground, into soft sand, over a year ago, and she's been fine since then.  i took her out once, for about 15 minutes of motor and 4 hours of sail, a few weeks ago and then I took her out for a very long (1.5 hour) motor yesterday.  this is the only time i've taken her out, this year.  the engine was extremely loud and vibrated a ton.  the rpm's did not seem out of wack.  i'm exhausted from the motor yesterday, espcially in my arms.  the coolent reseviour, which was put on a few years ago, shook enough to spew coolent all over underneath the sink, in the head.  Outside of diving down and looking at the prop, to see if anything is on it, what else can I do before I have to spend real boat bucks, getting her hauled out and looked at?

do people take their cushions off, in the winter (if you store, of course)?  I have, for two years, under shrink wrap and i'm thinking about not going through the hassle, this year.  Of course, I have to see how water tight my cabin top is, and how good my brand new cloth cover is too.

second, how much "red pop" do you go through, for the water system?  I thought it was only 2 gallons but my beneteau 50 owner had me buy 5.  we only put it, what - in the lines, in the head, in the sump and a little in each holding tank, right?
