Noah,
I have used Interlux Ultra both times I've done the bottom, mainly because that's what was on it, according to PO records.
I've also used both Shelter Island Boat Yard and Driscol on Shelter Island and prefer and recommend Driscol over the other. They did 2 coats on the bottom and a third at the water line.
My diver uses a carpet pad to brush off the growth to prolong the paint.

Bob,
Two questions come to mind.  You say you took the antisiphon off and blew through it. How did you get your mouth around that to blow through? And has your wife kissed you since then??

The first time I used the carpenter's chalk thing to look for a leak the chief looked at me like I had two heads.  This was on a 1960 vintage destoryer.  But after I showed him the results he thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.

It really works.

Ron,
That was my guess, just stick it in.  I'm rebuilding an old pump, putting the new seals in tomorrow and putting the rest back together.
I'm not sure how old this pump was but I tried the little tool you show and I could not get it to move.
I ended up putting a carrige bolt down in it and drove the old seal out using that and a BFH.
Cleaning up the casing with CLR to get the green stuff out and reassemble tomorrow.
The one I got from a reputable guy on this web site has been working perfectly now for about 3 months, thanks Ron.

Quick question for Stu or Ron, When looking at the front of the raw water pump on a 25xp engine which way does the impeller rotate. Clock wise or counter clock wise??

Been following this thread past week or so.  So yesterday I was at the boat and decided to check out the return valve thing.
First thing I discovered is that the PO had put a blue paint dot on the valve wheel at the closed point, and another at the 1/3 open point.  So I set it at the blue dot, turned on the key checked the fuel pump and no ticking.
Strange I thought, since when I change the fuel filters and I open the valve fully it ticks and bleeds the system.
Start the engine and  it runs and no ticking in the fuel pump, then the engine dies.
Start checking and the positive wire to the pump is laying in the bilges. The end going into the crimp fitting is corroded and broke/fell off.
So I pull the wire out, cut back some and re crimp with new fitting and it works as designed.
So glad it did not happen while motoring into the channel back to the marina.

Joyride,
Do you happen to have the part number for those??  I need to order two of them my self.

Thank you,

Noah,
Looks like mine did two weeks ago.  A lot of work but worth every pint of sweat.

Keep up the good work,

I would take it aft and up as high as you can and put in a vent similar to the fuel tank vent

Noah,
I work three days a week on board USS Midway in the ship restoration department where I have spent the last 18 months chipping paint, scrapping rust and painting and preserving a 1945 aircraft carrier.  I took a week off work to scrape, sand and paint a 1987 Catalina.  What a way to spend time off work.  But we are ready for our sailing season to start, oh I forgot, here in San Diego it never ends. :rolling :rolling :rolling

Just completed the stripping, sanding and 5 coats of new varnish, Awlgrip M3131, for the third time in 5 years of ownership. The only thing I would look at is a boat, Hunter for instance, that does not have teak trim.  But it looks great right now :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Jon,
We have owned our 87 Catalina 34 for 5 years now, and I do get a bit of water in every time it rains. The last rain we just had here in San Diego I had maybe a cup of water.
I installed a windlass a couple of years ago and it it turned out pretty nice, I'm at Pier 32 if you're ever in the area and would like to look at it.
We view our boat as more then "a hole in the water to throw money into" primarily because it is a Catalina quality boat.

If we ever get to the point of upgrading it'll be the Catalina 385.

Go NEMA 2000, plug and play, no terminals

I replaced mine with an AquaSignal Series 25 mounted on a 2 inch mount so it can more easily be seen.  I replaced the standard bulb with an LED when I mounted the light on top of the mast. If you stand on the bow you can see the light, so I know approaching boats should be able to see it too.
