Main Message Board / Waste Management

Dick, I could not find their website.  Is the unit a big power user?  I assume it pumps directly overboard after treatment, or is there a small holding tank of its own?  We are in the Northwest, crusing mostly in the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands, so assume it would be legal in our waters.  Did you install another thru hull or does it empty through the original thru hull?  Is there a need to keep the main holding tank with this unit operating? Thanks for the help.

Has anyone installed a legal treat and discharge system for waste on their 34MKll?  Finding a pump out station while crusing is a pain.  We had a Mansfield TDX system on our last boat that worked well, but they do not seem to be available now.  Surely someone must make something that would fit in our great boats!

Main Message Board / Diesel Leak

Dave, I had a similar problem when my boat was new.  The fuel tank vent line was run straight to the vent on the stern of the boat.  On a port tack the fuel would simply run out if you were not paying attention. I thought that the first time it was because I overfilled the tank.  I found that it would leak out even under a half a tank on a port tack.  It was corrected by adding a length of vent hose up to the top of the comming in the port locker.  this corrected the problem except that the mechanic kinked the hose at the top causing a different venting problem.  I have corrected that problem myself, and all seems to be working well now.

Thank you all for the input.  The Espar water unit sounds good.  Hot water would be a plus.  What about battery drain with the water pump and all the fans going.  Seems like it would be much more than one fan with forced air.

I am looking into adding forced air heat to the boat so we can enjoy some of the sunny but cool winter weekends away from the dock here in the Northwest.  We don't need cooling.  There seems to be at least two small diesal heaters that will do the job.  We don't want a bulkhead mount in the cabin, but forced air.  Any comments from users out there as to what is best, most quiet, reliable, etc.  What size (BTU output) is comfortable without overkill?  Thanks in advance for any information.

John, just a comment.  Be sure the chartplotter you purchase is visable in sunlight, as with that mounting location it is out there in the sun most of the time (unless you are under a lot of cloud cover like we are in the Pacific Northwest!)  Mine works great without even going to the full sun position setting. Good luck on your installation.

I recently installed a Garmin 2006C chartplotter on the sloping part of the pedestal guard.  It is similar to the Ray chart, only a little wider.  I ordered a Navpod unit that was about 10-1/2" high and 11-1/2" wide that is about 1" bigger each way than the 2006C.  I ordered it from Broken Leg Dave on the web, good service and reputable.  As I recall, he had sizes and model numbers listed, was also the best price I found(they don't give those things away!).  You need to know the size of your chartplotter.
I drilled one hole in the pedestal guard on the starboard side and picked up power from the ST60 panel above, running wires through the guard(very easy).  No problems as there no wires in that side of the pedestal.  Be careful as you drill the mounting holes for the navpod on the port side of the guard as the wiring runs up and down that one.  I Mounted the antenna on top of the guard instead of on the aft rail as I have seen others do.  It appears to be a lot of work to get the wiring up into the aft rail.  The antenna is on a swivel mount so that I can turn it down before I put the wheel/pedestal cover on.  Works great in this location.  The antenna wire goes through a small hole with a grommet underneath the top part of the guard and down into the navpod.  It is a very neat and tidy installation, works great, and does not look like a 747 cockpit.  Could e-mail a picture if you like.

Main Message Board / Compass removal

Thanks for the info.  I marked the compass with fingernail polish across the two parts to aid in realignment.  There must be two kinds of compasses out there as mine is a closed base after the compass is removed.  My screw driver is big, but maybe I need a bigger one.  My dealer has taken a look at the cable and transmission from the bottom end and found no problems.  I thought I would be a nice guy and look at the cable from the top as they are an hour away from my moorage.

How do you remove the compass from the top of the pedestal?  I have removed the outer trim and light and can see that the compass bracket appears to be mounted with four good size phillips screws.  Whoever mounted it must have been a real gorilla because I cannot seem to get these screws to back out.  I did not want to force anything and break the mounting bracket which appears to be plastic.  Anyone know any trick to this?  My purpose for wanting to get under the compass is to check the transmission cable from the upper end and possibly lubricate it as suggested in an earlier post.  Ocassionally the transmission does not go into forward gear.

Main Message Board / Screw in fuel tank

Stopped at the fuel dock today and upon opening the fill cap found the safety chain loose and hanging down the fill pipe.  I reconnected it but can only assume that the original screw is now in the bottom of the fuel tank.  Is this a potential problem with the fuel suction line in the tank?  Any thoughts on how I might retrieve it short of pulling the tank?

Main Message Board / Fresh Water pump

To clarify to all, the mechanic said it was the raw water pump seals leaking. I have not been back to the boat yet to look at the new pump.  It is the middle one driven by a shaft from the engine. There was enough water thrown around there to appear it was comming from the upper pump.

Thanks for all the imput out there.  It turned out to be the raw water pump seals leaking.  I called my dealer who sent a mechanic out immediately, diagnosed the problem, and can you believe, replaced it under warranty all in the same day!  They are even an hour away from my slip.  I would have to say Catalina and their dealer network has been very responsive to any little problem on my boat.

Thanks for all the info.  It is definately comming from holes in the upper pump on the engine, pully driven.  I did check hoses and none are leaking.  I have never adjusted the belt tension, came from the dealer as is last summer.

I hope I am not confused on what I am looking at.  I have the M35 diesel and the pump that is leaking is belt driven. I looked at the website you directed me to Stu.  It shows a belt driven pump high on the front of the engine that is labeled fesh water pump.  I assume there is no shaft running inside from the engine.  Water is coming from holes on the back/bottom side of this pump. I could not find a parts blowup of this pump on the website, although they have a fresh water pump listed on their parts catalog. I will pull it off and see what it looks like from behind.  Thanks for the help.
