Racing:

GGYC winter Series

The last race of the series will be held on March 3, 2007. The series winner will not be decided until that race is over.  It has been a very interested series with light winds and strong current for each race making tactical decisions extremely critical.

Rite-of-Spring - double handed - March 17, 2007

Fleet 1 has raced in this race for the last two years with our own one-design start.   Entry forms can be found on the OYC website:

https://home.comcast.net/~oycrace/2007/ROS/Rites%20of%20Spring.htm

If you plan to entry, please email Chris Owen (cowen@meriwest.com ) as he is keeping count of the C34.

Inter Club Series

The first race in this series is on April 14, 2007 in the Main Bay.  This year the format is 2 races (1st and 3rd ) in the main bay and 4 races in the South Bay - less wind and tricky currents in the South Bay.  The complete schedule can be found at:

http://www.sfbama.org/2006/IC06/IC07_Schedule.htm

If you have any questions, just ask.  If you are interested in crewing to get a feel of what C34 racing is all about, let us know and we will do our best to finds you a slot.

San Francisco Cup

This three race Catalina regatta will be held once again at Golden Gate Yacht Club on the weekend of September 22/23, 2007

Crew Wanted:

As you may have heard, Stan O'Hoppe is taking his Catalina 34 south in June this year. He is looking for crew for the return trip leaving LA around July 27.  If you are interested in being part of his adventure, email Stan at: sogohop2@earthlink.net and get the details.

Main Message Board / Chartplotter - a choice!
January 17, 2007, 09:22:45 AM
If you are considering adding a chart plotter to your instrumentation you should consider using a PC (or Mac) and one of the chart plotter software packages that are now available. These packages have all the features of (and in case more than) than propriety chart plotter systems at a fraction of the costs. Yes, there is the drawn back that standard PC are not water proof and therefore must be below deck plus used PC's (and Mac's) are not expensive to replace from time to time.  There are "water proof" monitors coming on the market that can be used as "at the helm" repeaters (<$1000).  Also updated vector charts and regular updates are now downloadable from NOAA free of cost.

I have successfully installed a used laptop Mac interfaced to my Raymarine instruments running the package MacENC {http://www.macenc.com/} without a great deal of difficulty - total costs $800.

Well the time has arrived to firm up our plans for the trip to Benicia on the weekend of July 15, 2006.

The straw poll that we did a few months ago showed 15 members with 30+ people willing to make the trip and enjoy the sunshine in Benicia, the sites and sounds of the ex-state capital (1853-1854), and the various points of interest in the area.  Based on this response, we have arranged for dinner on Saturday evening at the Benicia Yacht Club.

The plan:

Saturday:

  < 6:00PM    Arrive

6:30PM      Appetizers and drinks on the dock

   7:30PM      Dinner - Benicia Yacht Club   <changed 6/30/06>

Sunday:

                   Do as you please.

Could you please confirm that you are coming (or not coming) before by the end of June - June 30, 2006.

Day you plan to arrive at Benicia Marina

Total Number of people in your party

Number of nights you plan to stay in the Benicia Marina

When you plan to leave the bay area - e.g. - pass under the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge.

We thank all those who took the time to respond to our straw poll.

Thank you,   Ray

Mottley rescues J24 MOB during IC Race #2

"... The C-34 Start was close with wind 10 – 15 knots steady from the west an hour after max Flood.  The course was Berkeley to around Alcatraz, to #24 NE of Angel Island, to #3 under the Bay Bridge & Finish near Clipper Cove on Treasure Island.  We had a long tacking leg into increasing wind & waves and finally got around Alcatraz in second place behind Crew's Nest.  The next leg was almost strait downwind.  We were doing 7.5 to 8.5 knots through the water without a pole up because the wind was now over 20 knots & building.  We went around #24 (way around...) and were headed South to the Bay Bridge, but were far to the east of where we should have been (this becomes important in a few sentences).   The wind was now at least 25 knots and the current was changing to Ebb, creating very choppy seas, 3 – 4 feet from crest to trough.  We were still under a full main and a 130 jib doing 7.5 knots, but steering was very difficult.  We almost rounded up twice, so we reefed the main that helped but were still overpowered so we cranked in the jib until I could regain good control.  This became important...  It was very rough conditions but thankfully still a sunny day.   About 50 – 100 yards ahead of us, 3 J-24s were racing in close proximity.  One seemed to broach and then their kite let loose.  We could see crew scurrying & a pole wielded, but it was still pretty far ahead of us.  About a minute later, it happened.  One of my crew yelled 'There's someone in the water!'  There it was – a bright red/orange object with a head on top – about 40 yards ahead at our 2 o'clock position.

I quickly looked around and determined 3 things – we were the closest boat to the overboard victim, the only one moving toward the victim as the J-24s were moving away – remember 1 was in some trouble still – and we were still doing over 7 knots.  We had to slow down, get control of the situation and position ourselves for retrieval.  I yelled to douse the remaining jib as I turned to start the engine, praying it would fire up immediately.  It did.  The crew got the jib furled, watched the victim's location, and got our horseshoe float into the cockpit.  We didn't have a Lifesling; we didn't have our horseshoe float attached to a line.  I left the reefed main up because I thought it might give us stability in the adverse conditions, but also because we just didn't have time to get it down.  I was able to half circle the victim to position myself upwind so I could float down on him with the engine in neutral.  I was very conscious we did not want to run over him or knock him in these winds & seas.   I had yelled to throw him a line but nobody heard me, apparently.  This turned out to be a good thing, as I subsequently didn't have to worry about fouling my propeller on a lifeline, as we got close.  I got the aft ladder down into the water.  The victim (the heck with that, his name is John) was very calm and he had good auto-inflate equipment.  We floated down to him and Forrest grabbed his hand on the starboard side, about 10 feet from the stern.  They stayed clasped until John got around back and grabbed the ladder.  He rested just a moment and then climbed the ladder into the cockpit with a minimum of help, and bringing about 5 gallons of water with him!   But he was safe and we were all elated.

The time from seeing John to getting him onto Mottley was only about 2 minutes and we estimate he was in the water less than 5 minutes, but it took its toll.  We got him below and out of his foulies and life vest.  His teeth were chattering away and his fingers were cramped but he recovered fast.  John was thirty something, in very good physical condition, and we found out he was in active service in the Coast Guard!  I think this accounted a lot for his own cool headed handling of the situation.  His J-24 (Scissors something from Richmond YC) had now recovered but we had no chance of returning him in those conditions.  We hailed them and decided to motor to Clipper Cove at TI where it was calm and a transfer could be made.   There was no discussion on Mottley about returning to the race.  It would not have been appropriate.   Amongst thanks all around, we returned John to his boat and waiting crew at Clipper Cove..."

Despite our DNF for the race, I can tell you every member of the Mottley crew was smiling as we headed back to South Beach.  They did an incredible job and I am very proud of each of them...

Chris Owen
Skipper of the C-34 Mottley

P.S.  "What I learned today"

00. Buy more expensive life saving equipment than you can afford.  John got tangled in a line as he went overboard and was dragged behind his boat before freeing himself.  His vest self inflated during this and so he remained very visible throughout.

2.  Had he been much younger or a little older, in those conditions, there may not have been as happy an outcome.  I kept checking his eyes for signs of panic just before we retrieved him.  He was well trained.  Train your crew.

3.  We were incredibly lucky to get him on our first pass.

4.  The worse the conditions, the more likely something bad will happen.  Everyone needs to slow down & keep his or her wits about him or her.

Fleet 1 / Motley Rescues J24 MOB
May 16, 2006, 12:18:42 PM
Mottley rescues J24 MOB during IC Race #2  --- Chris Owen

All, --- I'm sending this to all of you as there are lessons to be learned & mostly so I only have to do it once!

Ironically, 3 of my 5 regular crew were not with us yesterday, unusual for us, but the 2 regulars, Ken & Bill, each brought a friend Forrest & Jack - new to sailing – so there were 5 of us on board for the InterClub race #2 Saturday.

RAF as told by Dave Davis

For those of you that have asked. The RAF is not the Royal Air Force. It is Retired After Finish.

What happened is that we finished and they gave us the horn. But about half way through the finish line we touch the pin.

After reading the good book, on our way home, we should have done a 360 and than went to the course side of the line and re-finished. But we did not. After I got home, I called the committee boat and explained what happened.

The RAF means that I get one point more than the boats that started. I should have known better since there was plenty of room to do the 360 and refinish.  My fault, this will be my throw out.

Main Message Board / Oil Pressure Alarm
February 09, 2003, 05:14:02 PM
The oil pressure alarm does not sound when the key it turned on.  My boat is a MKII #1383 with the Universal 35HP motor.  This problem has been intermittent for some time but now has gone hard not working.

A. The red oil pressure alarm light comes on and then goes off when the engine is started.  The means to me the alarm sensing unit is AOK.

B. I replaced the alarm unit with the loudest one Radio Shack had â€" know no oil pressure is bad news.

C. I measured the voltage across the alarm when the motor was not running with the key turned on and found it was less than 4Volts.  The label on the alarm takes more than 4.2 Volts to work.  I would have assumed this would be closer to 12V.

D. Unlike to water temp alarm, which just grounds the negative side of the alarm to activate it, the oil pressure alarm is some how involved with the lift pump and the pre-heat circuit.  Does anybody know:

1. How the circuit works?   I gather it is to shut off the pre-heat and the lift pump once the engine has oil pressure.

2. Where the 10A circuit breaker should in the circuit is located. I can find the main 20A breaker but not the 10A breaker in this circuit.

E. The Oil pressure is AOK when the engine is running â€" yes, I do have an oil pressure gauge.

Questions:

A. Do I need a special alarm unit that work with a lower voltages
B. Could something else in the circuit be broken?

Thank you for your help.

Main Message Board / Water in the bilge
July 04, 2002, 03:14:28 PM
After an extensive search (using paper and then water-soluble markers) for where the salt water was coming from into my bilge, I finally tracked it down.  It is coming through around the aft most keel bolt.   Has anybody had the same problem?  If so, how did you go about fixing it?     Thank you all..

Like most Catalinas, my instruments are mounted on the pedestal guard where neither the driver nor the crew can see them.  I am looking to move them forward to the top of the cabin at the front edge of the companionway â€" so they can be seen by all.    Does anybody have any experience in doing this project?  If so what were the major problems and how were they solved?   As I see it the most puzzling problem is how and where it run the wires so they are protected and not in the way.

Thank you, Ray
