Main Message Board / Throttle Cable Connection to Engine
September 07, 2010, 05:28:17 AM
Universal 35B. Yesterday lost throttle control from the pedestal. Apparently, the nut on the end of the throttle cable where it attaches to the engine vibrated loose and the connection broke loose. (I used some SS wire and made it home.) I found a couple of washers but the nut is gone baby gone. Now, before I call Dr. Golden Hands from the local diesel hospital, does anyone know exactly what is needed and how the connection goes together to bring it back to spec? Thx.

"I've mentioned in a past topic that I was never able to keep the rad's overflow bottle with coolant in it.  I've checked everything that I can possibly think of and I see no sign of where it goes.  This is happening since day one (I bought new) and when I add to the bottle...within days it's gone.
I've stopped wondering since the rad is always full, the temp @ 170 and doesn't overheat."

Same story! 170 all day every day. But the antifreeze disappears from the bottle. NO LEAKS, trust me. If you open the radiator cap on the manifold (engine cold), anti freeze oozes (leaks) out as soon as the pressure cap releases. Asked the dealer and two mechanics. Got double talk. No problem. Just like to know what's happenin' down there. Any clues?

Spent some time in the Port Charlotte, Charlotte Harbor, Capitiva, Pine Island Sound waters. The C34 is great and will be great for you and yours. One caution. Buy one with a shoal draft. Your water gets pretty thin in places. You don't don't want to be digging furrows with a 6' draft.

Main Message Board / Clogged Sink Drain on MkII
July 27, 2010, 06:23:43 AM
Well, the double sinks won't drain. You can imagine how happy this makes the admiral. I removed black vertical hose from the sink drain "T". They drain, so the plug is below. I poked the hose going to the sea cock with a flexible snake. Still clogged. Now:
Can I use a dowel Through the hose and Through the seacock to clear? Anyone ever use a small drain cleaner? I read about blowing it out, but the second sink drain has to be air tight - right?
Any advice greatly appreciated by me and the future marriage counselors.

Main Message Board / Ice Box Gasket
July 20, 2010, 06:05:32 AM
On the MkII there's a gasket that runs around the bottom edge (flange) of the ice box opening. The lid sits on this gasket to form a seal. Gasket needs replacement. Is there an easy part? I tried the foam weather strip from Home Dumpo, but the sizes don't come close. Thx.

Any one have a diagram of where, exactly to place a Garhauer motor lift on 34'MkII? I have been told it should be placed so that it centers the engine on the Edson Bracket. But, I can't see where you mount the the pole to accomplish this. Thx All.

anyone have any experience with a "Speedseal" cover for the Sherwood pump? I see they make one, but I can't see how they adopt the quick fix cover. The Sherwood pump has no face plate and the either the entire pump ,or the entire cover must be taken off to replace the impeller. Any info appreciated before I send them the money.
Thx

Just noticed that after some major engine work last year, the crankcase ventilation hose was not reinstalled. That is the hose from the top of the valve cover with open end next to foam sleeve on air cleaner. Would like to to replace now to control odor, etc. Called Hansen Marine, regional Universal distributor. They do do not stock this part. Any suggestions on what hose to buy and bend appropriately.  I have read about going to a KN filter, etc., but not now. Thx to all.

This is an email to and from Forespar re: lubbrication of the Marelon seacocks. Anybody wish to add to the confusion?

Do not use any spray type of grease. The valves will need to be replaced. Without a part number for the valve or a picture I can only take a guess as to what needs to be done. Remove the hose and hose barb and apply grease directly to the ball and you can apply grease from the outside to the ball. If you have the valves that are square bodies with four screws holding the sections together do not take these valves apart and they do not need any grease applied.

Subject: Thru Hull Lubrication

Sorry to bother you. Have a Catalina 34 with 6 Forespar Marelon sea cocks. No problems. Just want to know if I can lube these from the outside before the boat goes in the water. Can I spray silicone or a sub up thru the thru hull and lube the valve? I cannot detach the hoses and disassemble the sea cocks. Boat splashes Mon., 5/10, so sooner is better, if you can answer.

Thx/Rgds

I always thought they were 'Johnson' brand. Had the same thing happen, but in the yard. Put it back to together and used a stainless steel key ring for the pull. Has some meat on it and so far, no more problems.

If you buy a knitted king size fitted sheet, you don't need to cut and resew it.

Time to refinish the drop boards on #1472. Anyone know what the factory used and/or the best way to remove it. Plan to coat with Cetol Natural Teak and top coat with Cetol Gloss.
Thx

Main Message Board / Anchor Swivels

Upgrading to Rocna 33# with 5/8 twisted Nylon & 35' 1/4" or 5/16" hi test chain (BBB) with a rope to chain splice by professional rigger. Now, I have previously read about anchor swivels between anchor and chain. Taking an informal poll: Which ones do you like and/or recommend.
As always Thanks

Main Message Board / Re: Racor fuel filter numbers
December 06, 2009, 07:09:35 AM
If it helps, here are the numbers I use. I am sure the book calls for a 30 Micron primary and a 10 Micron secondary (engine). Why use a 2 Micron? Sounds like overkill, if Universal says 10 is OK.
Hope it helps.

Universal     M35 B      SN WW 2556 D904

Fuel Filter, Engine         Universal # 298854       NAPA 3390 or WIX 33390
