Main Message Board / Wheel Replacement/Auto Pilot
June 13, 2011, 06:43:23 AM
C34 Mk II, # 1472, has a the original Edson Wheel with a Raymarine 4000 Wheel Pilot. Works fine. I acquired a brand new leather covered wheel. New wheel is correct 40" dia. and shaft size, etc. However, the new wheel has 5 spokes (6 on the old one) , the new spokes are tapered (thicker at the hub-thinner at the rim) and the wheel has a slight dish to it (the hub is further forward - the old wheel is flat). You can't retro fit the 4000 to the new wheel because of the taper and the "dish". Raymarine has discontinued the 4000 and parts. I'll go for a new X5 wheel drive, but when I called Raymarine they were more than hesitiant about telling me it would fit a wheel with a "dish" and suggested "some custom fit" work.  Anyone got a 5 spoke Edson with a dish and an X5 pilot? If so how dfoes it fit and what do I order from Raymarine. Thx all.

1. No I do not need the seat, just the clear plastic that fits into the slot to keep "stuff" from exiting the open stern. 2. Yes, after taking a humility lesson at the local plastic emporium, they cut me a piece. I measured so carefully. Now I find out it has a taper to it. Catalina says boat was made in CA. Facility closed. They're looking for plans to build me a new one. The joy of it all!

1. The Doggie Door went to Davy Jones Fri. night. Trust me it didn't even pretend to float. Any ideas on how or where I can replace. 2. Anyone kmow the mfgr. or vendor of the original cabin light fixtures on the MkII? Appreciate any info.

Thx to all. W/A as soon as I get the cover off and start measuring.

Any experience installing a Garhauer motor lift on a 34 Mk II? See 2 arm lengths, 26" & 34", which one? Also height, 64" is OK? Any help appreciated. Thx.

Main Message Board / Re: Engine corrosion
March 08, 2011, 06:56:38 AM
I would immediately remove and re-build or replace the Sherwood raw water pump. The corrosion could and did block the weep holes in the pump. This resulted in letting sea water into the engine. About $10,000 later we had the boat back in the water. Trust me, replace the pump now. Westerbeke was adamant about it was something "I shoulda', coulda', wooda'" taken care of during normal maintenance. My new Sherwood, installed in 2009, will be replaced 2014 no matter what. Good luck.

Main Message Board / MK II Lazarette Storage
November 16, 2010, 05:37:35 AM
Visited a friend with a C400 and noticed that he had a mesh storage bag bag , one each in the small rear lazarette hatches. Great place to put lines and fenders. Currently, on my 34, anything you put in those hatches get lost and is impossible to retrieve easily. Any one ever purchase on of these bags or tailor one for a 34 MK II? I'm sure a a canvas guy can do it, but I'd rather not enter into any more massive debt for toys. All info appreciated. Thx.

Anyone install the above on a C34 MkII? I'm curious to see where the base for the vertical lift pole is placed. The boat has those "Princess Perch" stern seats with the stern pulpit rounded outboard to accommodate their backs. Pics wouuld be helpful, but I'll take any suggestions (if you have installed one). Thanks all.

Main Message Board / Re: Frozen raw water pump shaft

INMO, the basic Universal (Kubota block) engine is fine and durable. It's the questionable engineering of the raw water pump (Sherwood ). You all may remember my '09 problem with sea water in the engine caused by a bad seal in the Sherwood pump. I do trust my mechanic. His view is that in a salt water marine environment, the SAFE WORKING LIFE of that Sherwood is about 5 years. After that it should be removed and rebuilt or replaced based on cost. It's the only way to really prevent problems. Mine was new in '09 and in 2014 it will come off for a rebuild.

I am about to use the Napa oil filter that's cross referenced on their web site to the Universal filter # from the book. Anyone have any experience with the Napa filters on a 35B engine? Comments appreciated before I change. Thanks.

Installed a Rocna 15 (33#)on my MK II, 1472, Spring 2010. Went on stock roller and fit very well. No changes to roller necessary. Will try for pics next time I go to boat.

Main Message Board / Cabin Light Fixtures
September 13, 2010, 06:39:51 AM
Anyone know who the original mfgr was for the recessed cabin lights on 34 MkII. Looking to replace a couple with LED fixtures that will fit the original molded recess in the head liner. Thx.

Main Message Board / Re: Wing Keel on a Catalina 34
September 10, 2010, 06:14:09 AM
Having sailed fin keels for years and having C34, #1472, Wing Keel for 3 years; I can find no difference the performance re: keel. IMHO any differences would be more related to the condition and cut of the sails and their trim on any point of sail. I am a lifelong fin keeler and I can't tell the difference with my wing.

I did have one problem: We used to get hauled on a hydraulic trailer which worked well on the fin boats. Found out the Catalina 34 wing is 38" tip to tip. The trailer arms were 40" apart. We came out and went back in only once. When I got my heart out of my throat I went to a boat yard with a travel lift for the off season.

Thx to all. Special to Ken003 for the pics. They did the trick. Will tighten every thing tonight and be ready for sea by Friday. To those who own 35B's; there is no special adapter, etc. User washers and a lock nut. Thx again.
