I have read everything I can find about motor mounts for the M-35, and didn't find any posts of someone here replacing them.  So, I invite suggestions.

The same part was used/listed for the M-25XP and several other Universal engines, down to the M-12 (which we had on our Pearson 27-2).  The weight difference is about 30lbs from M-35 (335lbs, 30 hp, 4cyl)  to M-25XP (285lbs,  23 hp, 3 cyl), and M-12 (175lb, 10 hp, 2 cyl), plus transmission. The part has a base with 4" between slots to mount, and a 5/8" stud to tie to the engine bracket.  So, the same isolator is on various engines.

Weserbeke part 300974 (now) and aftermarkets with the same dimensions, and appearance are vastly different prices.  WB wants $193.90 each.  Toad is a little less for the same part.  Western Branch Diesel doesn't have any, and again said WB's computers are down so no price/availability info.   Cat.Direct has one at $161.80, and is an aftermarket of unknown manufacture.  They explained it works on the M-25XP, and are told the bolt pattern is the key. Toad sells one by Bushings, Inc., DF2205-2 for a mere $56.28.
On the other hand, Vetus.  They confuse me.  Many posts on putting the KSteun75 or 50 on the M-25XP engines.  Vetus info puts the weight limit at 165# for the K75, and 220# for the K100, which is too low for the M-25XP and the M-35, unless the limit is per isolator.   It appears the hp rating is fine for these engines by their specs.  The mounts don't look anything like the OEM, and I understand those who have used them found the 1/16" difference in bolt mount OK.  The price is about $70.  I have called Vetus US and await a call back to discuss.

Has anyone experience with the M-35 isolators, the Bushings, Inc or the Catalina Direct units?  Anyone put the Vetus on their M-35?  Am I missing something on the weight limits?   I really don't want to do this twice, but don't want to pay 3x the price if I can reasonably avoid it.  $56.28 v. 193.90 is the maximum $ difference, per isolator.

Thank you for any insights, again.

Main Message Board / motor mount bracket, M-35 et al.
September 17, 2021, 08:49:58 AM
New topic off the ?Sudden overheating topic, as this is different and an update to a similar topic over 10 years ago.

Sheared front motor mount bracket.

Universal/Westerbeke issued a recall 5/17/1994 on the motor mount bracket for "some Catalina's"  and specific, by its terms, to M-25XP and M-35(C) engines.  The bracket was sheering at the gusset, and a free replacement was available. I called Westerbeke and have not received a return call, yet. However, at some unknown date, they issued an updated service bulletin, available on their site, and stopped the "free" replacement, after several members posted about the issue around 2004. The updated service bulletin says the fracture is likely caused due to improper idle speed.  Because of this, I don't expect a return call from Bob Massanti (phonetic) the apparent customer service manager in parts.

The new part extends the support gusset by 1.5", to a total of 3.5".

Looking online, part #302969 is the replacement part.  Online prices I found range from $200 on up to an absurd amount.
Following Ken's suggestion on the ?Sudden overheating topic, I called Western Branch Diesel, and spoke with Kelly.  They don't have these in stock and Westerbeke can provide. I note, Western Branch Diesel is a retailer, with multiple stores, and a limited sales region area.  So, YMMV on purchases out of their region.  The part cost Kelly quoted is $207.80 plus shipping. The same price on the Westerbeke site.

No retailer around me has them.  I have calls into welders to see if they can help.

Main Message Board / ? Sudden overheating?
September 07, 2021, 08:00:18 AM
Yesterday the M35 started right up, ran very well for 25 minutes and attained normal operating temp of about 165F, at 1500 RPM and 6.2-6.5kts cruising.  Sailed for five wonderful hours in great wind. (Saw 5 other C34's).  Furled the genoa poorly in gusty wind.  Had the admiral start the engine so I could try again.  The engine started right up but with loud screeching noise like a belt or alternator.  She saw the temp go to 180F then to the pin and it was running rough, in the span of a few short minutes while I was wrestling the furler in 18-20kt gusts. I suggested she give it fuel to see if it warmed up and stopped the racket, until I could get back to the helm to check it out. The engine shut down on its' own before I could get back to it.   When I went back to try, it started rough, and shut down again with screeching.  The alternator was showing it was charging. I anchored, let it cool for an hour.  Checked again, raw water was coming out the tail, with lots of smoke and screeching continued.  Shut it down in less than 30 seconds.
At anchor, instead of grilling up some dinner I:
Pulled and replaced the impeller, the prior on was new this season, and still looked it but I had the Sherwood pump open, and figured why not.
Coolant level was same, about an inch from the top, nice color.
Oil was fine, no froth, no appearance of anything out of order.
Fan belt - seemed fine.  Backed off and re-tensioned while I had the engine open. (last year the belt was loose and made a similar, lower volume, noise).

So, the smoke seemed white.  Not sure if it relates to the problem. It could be water in the fuel, but I am thinking the fresh water pump because of the screeching.
We sailed back to the dock, in the dark, with 2-3kts wind on the nose. I was done for the day, and the admiral was too.

I will be going back to the boat, just over an hour away.  I read Nigel Calder's suggestions in his Mechanical and Electrical manual. Signs of blow-by are absent.  I will check the fuel bowl. I recognize it is possible with the deck fill cap I may have water in there if not tightened enough.  But the noise leads me elsewhere, to the pump.

Anything else?

Main Message Board / Genoa Sheave
June 16, 2021, 06:01:43 PM
My port side genoa sheave froze before I realized it and now it is done. It is the OEM Garhauer.  I reached out to them and it is no longer available, so I am now in the market for the genoa blocks (both to match).  I read the prior postings and know the curved track may be a problem (1992 C34).  Any one replace theirs and have a recommendation?
I called Schaefer already and they have no sheave to fit.

I saw a C34 with cockpit adjustable cars in Atlantic Highlands, NJ.  Garhauer has these, but at $350 + shipping.  Looking like a pipe dream at the moment, and since I don't race, a rare pipe dream at that. Also, I didn't notice if the cars were on a curved track, though it was definitely a V1 of our boats so it is likely so.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Main Message Board / Head vent issues 1992 mk1.5
July 03, 2020, 07:39:04 AM
Happy 4th to you.  The admiral & I are currently on the hook.  Of course, mighty Murphy is with us.
Thes holding tank vents to a mushroom on deck near the pump out. No y- valve.  No macerator. Toilet to tank, tank to pumpout. Vent line from top of tank  to deck.
Couldn't pump a flush this morning.  Admiral says bowl is refilling every time she pumped through the night.  Tank offs round on top, lifting cushion.
Vent hose was clear when got it off.  Massive stink from tank gasses. Mushroom allows air in & out.  90 degree elbow seems to have a one way valve in it.  Can bellows thes tank & gas escapes with vent hose off.
However when try to pump from bowl it won't go.
We have a "no" paper & no #2 rule, so not a clog in line.
The tank was way pressurized from pumping.  I am stuck.  Any suggestions?

Looking for insight.  Weeks ago, I spoke with Doyle about a stack pack. (Wobegon has a Doyle main, now in great shape thanks to Sailcare) Theirs attaches to the main directly, allowing for a "better" sail shape and experience due to its own battens and being directly attached. They also came up with a Cradle Cover, which is similar but doesn't attach to the main and seems to work more like the other stacking main sail covers. The Stackpack requires I send the main to them, will take weeks, and then it comes back.  The Cradle Cover ships to me with no sending the main. Doyle was to get back to me with a turnaround time, and with the virus closures, has yet to do so.

I looked at Bacons Sails alternative, and liked it fine.

Anyone have experience with the Doyle or other?

Main Message Board / DC ground issue
February 09, 2020, 08:44:32 AM
I seem to become stuck on what is probably a small issue.

Wobegon came to me with little information and I am having an electric ground issue.  She has two type 27 wet cells (house), and one type 24 (starter). These run to the panel switch.  Batt 1 is starter, 2 is the house.
When select one, the 12 v system works.   When select 2, it does not.  All batteries charged.
Positive battery wire has good continuity for both banks, and the switch works fine.
Battery 2 ground goes under the soul and up to the back of panel entrance, into a taped bundle and I lose it.
There is no apparent large gauge black wire to the negative bus bar affixed behind the panel.
Battery 1 ground goes under the cabin soul in the factory conduit direct to the engine block. (Universal 35).  Continuity is good.
When I attach the #1 ground to bank #2, the panel works. (lights, pumps, vhf, etc.)
Clearly seems to be a ground issue.

The owners manual shows both negative wires combine, then go to the engine block as one.  I can tie the three battery grounds together, but am concerned this may cause a problem as someone, PO or factory, did separate them. If I do tie them together, would I use a heavy gauge bus bar in the battery compartment, or just tie bank 2 batteries to each other then to the starter bank 1?
Would running a separate individual ground to the block be better?  Or running a new ground to the panel bus bar?

I did reach out to the long term PO for insight as to why the ground was split, but have not heard back. He sold to another, from whom I purchased, as Wobegon apparently sat unused for two years. The engine harness plug issue appears to have been addressed in 2010, and in my reading of the topic I did not see the battery bank ground as part of the fix.
Any suggestions?
