Hi,
We are going to have to sell our C34 that is currently docked in Seattle.   We live 600 miles away so usually only use the boat in the summer.  In early May we will spend our usual week cleaning it up and getting it ready for the season.   This year we need to sell it.

Because we live so far away we  are thinking of using an agent rather than selling it directly ourselves.   I am interested in others experiences either pro or con.

Any advise on specific agents or companies?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi,

I am sure this is already somewhere in a note but I can't find it.

I am probably going to add an simple AIS system and am looking for a place to power it from.   I still have the original electrical panel and never have the  accessory 2 switch on.  It has a cable attached to it that appears to head toward the stern of the boat.   I would have tried to follow it further but managed to have some health issues about that time and could not handle the task.    So, does anyone know what it is attached to and if I can disconnected it and attach the AIS equipment? :?

Thanks.

Hi,
Since i purchased my 1988 C34 5 years ago, I have waxed it each spring with 3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax, a big job by hand.  That is the wax that  the previous owner used.  The boat still looks good.    My brother-in-Law says that the people is his sailboat yacht club just use 303 protectant  on their boats.   I have used the 303 before and once put some on the deck of an older small sailboat, big mistake.      Any thoughts on the merit of one versus the other.  I have one shoulder (left) that I  am not currently supposed to use.  I usually switch back and forth between arms as they get tired.   Obviously the paste wax is a lot of work.   I could always wait until the shoulder is better.   If there wasn't always many others boat things to spend money on I could pay someone to wax it but that will not happen soon.

Thanks.

Hi,

Last thing yesterday , just before leaving the marine and going north for a week. I found out that my two Gel batteries were shot.  So to save not going, I went down and purchased two of the same size AGM batteries.

In see from some other post that wet cell was the way to go.

Anyway, the battery charger has two setting, flooded or Gel.  I have received conflicting advice on which setting to use.  One post said I should get a different battery charger with an AGM setting.  That can't happen until at least middle on next week.

Advice welcome,
Thanks,

Hi,

From my readings, I gather that Butyl Tape is the "right" thing to use for rebedding the chain plates.   The rigger that I am working with recommends using Sikaflex 295 UV instead and it is available at the local store. Has anyone had experience with using Sikaflex 295 UV or the newer Sikaflex 295i UV.

Thanks,

Hi,
I found that the previous owner left a band new New England brand 200 ft + 1/2 " anchor line on the boat.  However, it has plastic thimbles on the ends.   Any advice on if I should use this new line at all for my anchor.   The existing metal thimbles on the installed line are corroded and the line has some warn spots.    I have moved the boat to where I will do lots of anchoring in the future so I acquired a Rocna 15 with 35 ft of chain.   I am suspecting that I should forget about the existing new one with the plastic thimbles.  Advice?

Thanks,

Fleet 5 / Greetings

Hi, our C34 is now at Swantown Marina.  No mast installed yet but soon.  We plan on moving to Elliott Bay Marina at the end of July.

Greetings sailors in the fleet 5 area.

Hi,
Sorry if this is covered elsewhere.

When I purchase our boat 4 years ago the guy doing the survey recommended drilling at drain hole at the bottom of the mast to let the water out easier.   Well, the mast is down for repainting and trucking.

I do remember moving the wires where they come out close to the bottom of the mast after a good winter storm and having water come out.   There was lots of dirt around the bracket that the mast sites on that may have reduced the drainage there.

Any thoughts?

Fleet 5 / Misc Washington State Costs?
May 04, 2013, 01:07:54 PM
Hi,
I am moving my C34 from the SF bay area to Olympia this month.   I am used to paying the property tax fee for the boat every year to the county that it is in.  In runs around $380 a year.  I currently don't pay anything to the state of California for a fee.   For the county I have the value listed as $44,000 or something like that.

What iare you guys paying to the state of Washington on top of what the marine changes?   I haven't seen a simple formula anywhere on the yearly cost.

Thanks,

Main Message Board / Need to repaint the Mast?
January 03, 2013, 11:27:32 AM
Hi,
We are planning on having our 1988/89 C34 trucked from the Bay Area to the Seattle area in late May.  Obviously the mast needs to be removed.   We redid the rigging 3 years ago but the mast and boom have never be repainted.  It seems like the logical time to do that if we are going to have it done.  There is a reasonable amount of corrosion that can be seen.  The cost seems to be between $3000 and $6000 for the repainting.   Repainting them on the Seattle end after it is moved would be the best option because of possible damage during shipping.   Obviously repainting the mast and boom is a significant amount of money.   How important is it that we have that done?

Thanks for any comments.  :?

Fleet 5 / Winter out of water
August 21, 2012, 08:26:08 PM
Hi,
Anyone know of a good marina other than Olympia that has  a boat yard that has out of water boat storage for a C34 during the winter?   A more central or northern location would be better.

Thanks

Hi,

I have an 1988 C34 in the SF bay.   I will probably retire next summer and would love to move the boat north (Puget sound) and sail a month or two every summer.    I spent a couple weeks several years ago on a smaller sailboat boat sailing the San Juans and south and it was really enjoyable.

On the web site of every marina I have looked at they say there are big waiting list for slips.   I need some local wisdom on the subject.   I remember when I was told in SF that the Marina where I wanted to stay had a 10 person waiting list.   It was obvious that there were lots of slips though.  The real story was that they were screening people.   That wanted people with well maintained boats that would actually pay.  Any wisdom or suggestions?

Another issue is if I should move the boat or sell it in SF and buy another equal boat up north.   I would like to keep the current one because I have become familiar with its characteristics and challenges.   The is also the cost of shipping it north, $5,000?

Another  option is to sell it and just rent one for a month or two every summer.

Main Message Board / New C355 in Alameda
February 27, 2011, 12:17:20 PM
 :clap

Hi,
We visited the new boat(C355) in Alameda yesterday.   We spent about 45 minutes looking into every area we could.  We like most of the new features a lot.  We are willing to trade our 1989 C34.  $200,000?

I remember reading the comments from people that have looked at the boat elsewhere and am interested in the locals views.

Main Message Board / Bleading fuel lines- problem
February 27, 2011, 12:10:05 PM
Hi,

The right answer is probably already on the forum but maybe this boat is set up different?  Maybe not.
Hi,

I just replaced both fuel filter.   The Racor is on the input side of the fuel pump(normal?).   I started out with the vent on that open and would get no fuel.  So after noticing where the pump was I closed the vent and the bowl and filter filled up.

I do notice that the pump sounds different than normal.   Of course I don't usually have  the doors all open.   It seems like normally it is more of a clicking rather than a purr.

Anyway, I get no fuel to the engine.   I have the bleeding value open.   I was successful with that in the past.   As when I took the fuel tank out and cleaned it last fall.

It is always fun doing these things for the first time.

Fleet 1 / Best source of replacement foam in Bay Area
February 15, 2011, 06:53:38 PM
Hi,
I replaced the foam in the seat cushions a year ago from a place in Redding.  They say they used the highest density foam but it is already compressing.  It was not cheap! :?

I need to replace the foam in the sleeping areas.  I assume it is the original, from 1988-89.   Any suggestions on the best vendor to go to in the Bay Area and what to ask for.  I am in Vallejo.

Thanks,

Main Message Board / Beeding fuel lines?
October 05, 2010, 08:27:22 PM
I remove the fuel tank last week, took it home and cleaned it as described elsewhere.  I was really bad, maybe hadn't been cleaned in twenty year.  Anyway, I reinstalled it, added 10 gal of clean fuel and was going through the  bleeding the fuel system procedure  in a Universal procedure I downloaded.  I get plenty of fuel out the air bleed plug on the fuel filter.   I  don't get anything out the air bleed plug on the injector pump.   Given that it is the first time for all of this I assume that as with most things the first time, I am doing something wrong.   There is a simple thumb screw on the injector pump I believe.  I turn it and no fuel comes out.   Any hints on what to try next. :?

Main Message Board / Stripper on Lewmar 30 winch
July 04, 2010, 02:08:17 PM
Hi,  the stripper in the Lewmar 30 self trailing winch broke yesterday.  Our boat is a 1989.   I found the part number online but suspect that I have to wait until Tuesday to order the part of someone has one.   Does anyone have any advice on who to try first and how hard it is to replace?

Main Message Board / PROFURL Furling?
February 24, 2010, 05:05:28 PM
Hi,
I needs some words of advice please.   The existing Profurl takes a lot of manual labor to take in or let out.  It is probably 20+ years old.  The manual says that no maintenance is required.    It only mentions keeping it clean.   Any suggestions other than getting a new one?

The manual is both in both French and English, very short on English words.

Main Message Board / fridge quit
January 19, 2010, 07:42:22 PM
Hi,

I am reasonably new to this boat.  It is a 1989.  I have been living on the boat during the week since I purchased the boat in June.  The previous owner only used the frig during infrequent use.    It was working fine before Christmas.  I turned it off for two weeks.  Now it does not work.   The compressor seems to work but it does not cool.   I am in the SF bay area.     I welcome any suggestions.    I figure I will need to call a repair person.

Thanks,
