Main Message Board / Hurricane Ike Victim: Mariposa
March 09, 2009, 07:19:36 PM
FYI: The Mariposa is now on the auction block in Galveston Yacht Club. It's not a pretty picture, but it faired better than any of the boats around her. Shes up to 10100.00 as of today. The auction will be over on Saturday. If anyone is interested, leave a note on this board and I'll give a email address and any info you may need. If I was 20yrs younger, I'd bought her. The web site for the pictures is:

The Mariposa has officially been declared " Totaled " by my insurance company. Hurricaine Ike has declared another victim. The good news is the insurance total was more than the value of the boat because I had a " Agreed Value " policy. Good news for you other Catalina owners. This is one well made boat. Mariposa was secured with new top of the line dock lines. 5/8's inch doubled braid line.

The problem was caused by a 36 ft Carver that broke loose, broke my finger pier loose and caused my boat to get into the pole that was between my boat and my slipmate's boat. The piers are 3 year old ShoreMaster Floating piers. Top of the line piers. That pole was like a telephone pole. The Mariposa snapped that pole like a toothpick. The remains of it and another finger pier were floating beside my boat after the storm.

There were 7 other boats that were involved. Two 36ft Carvers, a 38 ft Tayana, two sea rays, and two Bent-a-toes. Two Carvers and a Sea Ray were sunk. The other boats were totaled on the spot.

The Mariposa was floating around like the winner of a boxing match. It had no life lines, no staunchions, two broken shrouds, no stern pulpits, and no bow pulpits. The anchor roller was bent beyond repair and it had a bent port hand rail on the cabin top. As you can imagine, a ton of fiberglass damage, especially on the starboard side where it hit and broke the pole. The cleats were all there with no damage, amazing!
The boat had to have had boats and finger piers all over it.

Main Message Board / Steering Noise
October 03, 2005, 01:59:46 PM
On a day sail this past weekend, I was on a port tack when I felt the wheel making a slight grinding noise when turning the wheel to starboard to compensate for too much sail being up. I was barefooted and I could feel a vibration under the cover for the emergency tiller. I haven't had a change to inspect this, but I will be back at my boat on Thursday and I will pull the cover and the panel in the aft cabin and check and inspect the chain, steering quad., and anything else that looks suspect.

Any ideas?

Main Message Board / Opening Port Leaks
June 27, 2004, 06:54:43 AM
Having trouble finding postings I had up on the FIND option yesterday. It was from 2002 or 2001 and it discussed changing the o-rings on the opening port latches. I need the size. He got the o-rings from McMaster-Carr catalog. I tried "opening ports", "Mcmaster-Carr", "o-rings" and many other words with no luck. Couldn't get the search function to work on the home page. Any help would be appreciated, especially from you, Stu. Thanks.

Just an FYI:

I have a friend who has been deaf since his childhood in South Africa. He leaves Palacios, Texas, next Sunday, 2/29, to sail solo around the world. His boat is a Tartan 37, 1977 model. He has been working on this boat for 6 mos. getting it ready. His wife and two children have setup a website.

Wish him luck.

Main Message Board / Nonskid Repair
July 26, 2003, 04:32:56 PM
The nonskid deck laminate is coming up in a spot about 2". It started as a bubble. I need to repair it to keep moisture out. I'm not sure what is the best material to use. I would like to try some of the West System, but I've never used it before. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. In the meantime I will use the "search" part of this site.
Thanks, Norris

Main Message Board / Raymarine FYI
April 29, 2003, 03:56:54 PM
Just had a phone conversation with someone from Raymarine about my Autopilot. The Control Head went out and was just displaying "garbage". I sent it to Raymarine at their request. The person I tried to talk to could barely speak English. Best I could tell, it will cost me $200 plus shipping to repair the control head. The unit was purchased from Defender 10/99. It should last longer than that. I can't find a place on their web site to complain.

Sorry, I just had to vent.

Main Message Board / FLYBACK 20-3 Battery Charger
January 13, 2002, 08:02:17 AM
Anyone had trouble with their Battery Charger? I have the Flyback 20-3 charger. It will
not go to the float mode. It use to go to the float mode (~1/2 amp). It continues to charge my two banks of 6 volt golf cart batteries at 7 to 8 amps. This will "cook" the water out of the batteries. I am going to contact the company.
Thanks,
