Main Message Board / Its both a sad and wonderful time
September 16, 2014, 10:20:03 AM
Sad, because we have sold our Catalina 34, SchatzSea, that we have owned since November 1998.  Wonderful, because we sold it to a friend on the next dock in our club and bought a 2000 Catalina 42 Mk 2.

Jo Ann wanted to look at updating to a Mk 2 C34 or C36. I stopped into see a broker friend to discuss the matter and he showed me the C42. It had been stolen and neglected so I submitted a bid and won. It needed a few things but I'm still well under budget and we just returned from our two week shakedown cruise to Catalina. Minor issues mainly with the mascerators but no breakdowns and are loving the boat.

Anyway, I have joined the Catalina 42 group but will continue to check in from time to time on this site. I want to thank everyone for making owning a Catalina 34 very enjoyable and providing answers to so many questions over the years. You have made a tremendous difference in my life.

THANKS YOU!

The M35 rear motor mounts are on the bell housing rather than on the engine as on the M35B. The rear of the engine must be raised and the bell housing removed to access the transmission bolts. My C34 is a 1990 with the M35.

I too am dissapointed in AIS. I like the information provided on boats that are transmitting and believe it is a good aid, but it is not a replacement for RADAR. Last weekend we went from San Diego to Catalina and two ships were not transmitting. Both were 500+ foot ships that should have been indicated. Navy ships also don't appear so its not reliable for collision advoidance.

My wife Jo Ann and I will be flying east (from San Diego) on May 26th and joining friends on their Cat 400 for the Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club raftup this weekend. I am curious to know if there are any members of the C34 Association that will be attending. Here's a link to their site: http://www.sailccyc.org/Events/evt_0528.htm

Welcome. I would like to invite you and the other Cat34 owners in the area to visit the San Diego Catalina Asso. We meet the first Wed of each month at 7:30 at Silver Gate Yacht Club. Several members have Cat34s. SDCatA an all Catalina association and we are holding the Cat25/30 Nationals this Sep 23-26. Frank Butler and Sharon Day are scheduled to attend. I'd like to have the 34s Nationals in San Diego if we can build the fleet. I know you will find this group helpful and fun.

Welcome,

Eric,

A good source for used and surplus parts is Minnie's in Newport Beach.

The San Diego Catalina Association meeting is tonight at Silver Gate Yacht Club. The Hatheways are tonight's speakers. They have circled the globe in a older 35 foot boat and are preparing their C34 for a new venture expected to begin this year and will talk about preparing their C34 for blue water sailing. Meeting begins at 7:30. You are welcome to come by an meet other Catalina owners. We have 5 C34s in the fleet. Come by earlier and join us for drinks and dinner. http://www.sdcatalinaassoc.com/

Welcome back to SoCal!

Mike,

Since your are in San Diego, come visit the SDCatA meeting at Silver Gate Yacht Club next wednesday at 7 PM or come early for dinner. I'm SGYC Fleet Captain so I can assure you that you'll be welcome. Capt. Al Sorkin will be our speaker. BTW, I have a local source for Kubota parts. Seems that Bobcats have Kubota engines.

Main Message Board / Re: Diesel Additives

This is a great discussion! Thanks for the information.

FWIW, last year at the Catalina Rendevous, one of the speakers presented a recommendation that was counter to all of the information I had ever heard about diesel in fuel tanks. His recommendation was to not fill  the tank with more fuel than you will burn in a couple months. His reasoning was that the current formulations are unstable and are more of a risk than condensation in the tank. I use a biocide and have a water separator but am still worried about water in the tank. Any comments?

I want to invite any C34 owners near San Diego to attend the SD All Catalina Association meeting at 7PM on Wednesday 2/7/2007 at Silver Gate Yacht Club. Speaker this month is Capt. Al Sorkin who played the master at arms in the movie Master and Commander. He will talk about making the movie, the Star of India, Argus, Californian and HMS Surprise. I would like to get a C34 fleet going in San Diego as part of the SDCatA. We have 4 C34s now in the fleet now. Come early and meet the SDCatA members and have dinner with us. Hope you can join us next week. SGYC is located at 2091 Shelter Island Drive in San Diego, CA.

Mike,

I need to re-canvas my dodger and would like to know if you have any good quotes. I have just started looking so don't have any prices to share but I will soon.

Come visit (and join) the SDCatA. Meeting is at SGYC at 7 PM on the 1st Wednesday of each month. http://www.sdcatalinaassoc.com/

3/8" if fine if you use a quality low stretch line. I used 7/16" to stay with a low cost line. I used Sta-Set X but don't recommend it. It's stiff and awkward to splice. I'd use 7/16" again just because it easier on my hands and fits my clutches better. Take a look at the Sampson XLS Extra. I have had good results (very low stretch) and it handles and wears well.

I replaced mine last year on a 1990 C34 and all holes lined up. No drilling required!
