Main Message Board / Hatch Scratch Fever
« on: March 13, 2019, 11:56:45 AM »
Outbreaks of Hatch Scratch Fever are now being reported. This inevitability happens every spring and seem to last primarily through the Summer months. Symptoms are shrugging of shoulders and facial cringe when sliding the companionway sliding hatch on various Catalina Sailboats made prior to 1995. This can be quite insidious as it affects crew members and dock neighbors almost as seriously. There is a cure and 150 case studies so far have shown treatment  has shown to have 99% efficacy.

This is great stuff!  Thanks for taking the time to post, photograph and explain your experience.  Mine are still "free floating" but after your post and photos I am screwing mine down.  Like Dr Emmet Brown once said, "well, I figured, What the Hell..."

After a year of selling these strips and more than 83 sets delivered I want to share some feedback from purchasers.  By and large the strips are a tremendous success.  I have only received a couple responses where the strips didn't work.  There has been more than a couple comments about the strips tangling inside the track, making it difficult to remove them without some disassembly of the hatch.  While this has happened a very few times, and mine are "free floating." I am recommending screwing the tail end of the strips down as shown in the picture provided by Noah.  I am also recommending searching this forum key words "hatch ate my slider."  Noah posts a great tutorial on the situation!!

I have had so many great emails from happy C34 owners that no longer have Companionway Screeching!   Once they install these really simple strips the quiet slide is amazing.  If you want to order its simple contact me holzie-at-gmail dot com.  Check out the videos below on youtube.

Is this stuff too thick to fit the thin space?

Just get my strips problem solved.  You can buy your own 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of 1/16" HDPE plastic and cut a strip 1" x 72" there is not secret.  I just have gone through the process of doing for the group.   I have sold over 62 sets since I started last Summer.  Not one dissatisfied customer.  No adhesive back, no cleaning necessary just slide them in or take them out.  It takes seconds.  holzie at g mail dot com for more info

Stop Screeching Companion Way Hatch Available Now

Screeching Companion Way Hatch?  Many years back Graham Mackay posted a solution to a screeching companionway hatch sliding against the cabin top.  I followed his instructions to the letter and it solved my problem.
New problem is I needed to buy a huge sheet of plastic 48" x 92" to get (2) 1"x 72" x 1/16.  So needless to say I have the ability to make a lot of strips.  If you have a screeching hatch  $15.00 paid to paypal will deliver a set of pre cut strips to your door.  These really work they install in minutes with no removal or alteration to the hatch assembly.  Please include your mailing address and email address.  www.paypal.me/markholzmann/15  (link is external)  Questions? email me at holzie at gmail dot com. https://youtu.be/1AOsPGluaDs (link is external)

On the C36  92 and older water drains directly aft to the cockpit. In 93 and later in the MkII the water is diverted to the cabin top. I believe on the 34 it's the same.

Nope.  I have two slits on the sides of each wooden hatch holder.  When I flush the channels, water comes out these slits.  I had posted a photo years ago of this, haven't been able to find it, yet...

Perfect!  I hope you don't mind I have copied your pictures.  It really helps explain where the strips go and how they work.  The beauty is you don't have to take anything apart.  Although eventually one should, LOL
