interesting ---

with my open transom I was pondering a long tiller aft ...     but if considerable force is needed  it  sounds a no go ...

the bicycle  wheel   idea  stu   mentions  sounds more feasible ...

if I made a vane  which  turned  the same diameter wheel  and  connected it to  the helm  with a long belt ?     anyone done this ?

I m   trying to take advantage of my  workshop  and maybe save money  !!

Just wondering if anyone has tried to make a wind vane and link it to the emergency tiller post  ?

I m  thinking  welding a wheel to the tiller post  and linking that with a belt to another  wheel   on the vertical  wind vane --

mad idea  ?

ok  ...   so moved  marinas and noise has stopped  --   must have been local turtles or  something --

incredible how sound is amplified  in a hull  !!

ghost busting ....  yes

I ll  lock the wheel  tonight ..  see if helps ...   but last night it was too still to move the rudder ...

and the sound is not a creaking ...    more like a straining  banging sound ...   a local guy says probably  critters ...  but they d  need big teeth to be so loud ....  even ear plugs barely help  !!

a mystery ---

txs to ken and chuck for trying ,  but defintiely not critters --    the sound is nothing like that ,,,   and so difficult to describe ..  but it s how I imagine a tensed fiberglass rope  might sound just before snapping -

it s  not regular, but in salvos,  magnifies  inside the boat ,  but can still be heard topsides, I have no power to the boat, no  wind at all - so not rigging related.

now in the morning it s  stopped - lord knows why ...

and no .  ...    don t think I m  going crazy ..  but another sleepless night might do it    !!

any wild guesses  ??   I have to solve this  !

HAUNTED BOAT

This is my second night of very little sleep. The cause of my malaise is a mysterious intermittent undescribable noise.

I first noticed it last week at a different marina, I haven t heard it yet on the hook.

I ve disconnected shore and battery power – and it occurs with no wind or swell.

Do hulls expand and contract ?   Because the noise is impossible to pinpoint. Sometimes starboard sometimes port, usually midships.

Now the boat is new to me so zincs maybe shot – related ? Am I being zapped electronically ?

so hard to convey the sound ...   It s like the hull is being hit by a salvo of stress fractures ... for 4 - 6 seconds , then it will stop for 20 and continue ..  and it s so loud !  I moved my boat so as not to bother a neighbouring slip.

I m at a loss, fatigued and perplexed !

Hi all,

searched the forum for a few hours and can t find the answer ...   anyone help ??

I wrongly over cranked the engine thinking key on + alarm was warming the glow plugs ...  then realised spring pressure was needed to warm plugs ...    ENGINE STARTED !   great

however once started ... I no longer have coolant coming out of exhaust.  Is this a result of over cranking ?  would just cranking damage the impeller ?

water enters the filter after sea cock so took off input hose to impeller and filled it with water and replaced --  no luck ---    don t have a small pump handy to prime ...  one owner has suggested taking off outlet hose to impeller and starting ...    good idea ?

before I was cranking with the sea cock closed to avoid flooding ..   and opened the butterfly valve - a small flow came out ...   but dont understand it s function ...   does it drain the muffler ... ?

what next  ?

txs

Hi,

Done searches here but can t find the answer -  why does my new boat (1990) have two steel cables fixed either side of the mast about 10 - 12 ft  below mast head. Each is about 5 -6 ft long and each has a pulley at the end - They just swing about in the breeze  and complicate mainsail raising --  are they for managing a headsail ?  can I just climb up and eliminate them ?

txs in advance ,

Ian

thanks guys   and in particular Clay  for  clarifying the issue ...

I shall try to improve my electrical knowledge so as to contribute to debates ....

perusing the site I came across:-

"Had a very intresting experience on the boat last weekend.  We were staying on the boat in the slip and in the middle of the night were awakened to the sound and lights of what seemed like arc welding.  I got out of the v-berth very quickly and scrambled to the dock to throw the shore power breaker.  After some investigation and venting the boat of all the smoke, I found the source to be the battery charger which was mounted under the nav table on the hanging locker bulkhead."

This sounds like the very same thing that happened to my boat -  aided and abetted by a lightning storm which struck the marina taking out shore computers etc.

The good news is that the damaged wiring seems to have been isolated to the charger. The wiring behind the panel seems ok  and I have been able to start the engine from the cockpit panel - which purrs  nicely-  so with a new main panel I should be in business.

txs again ...  must get back to the site ... and research --
