Main Message Board / Speed on different tacks
August 07, 2019, 12:30:36 PM
Boat is a 2004 Tall Rig

This continues to bother me. Rig is set every spring, halyard and eye are used to make certain that mast is straight. Loos Gauge is used to make certain that tensions are correct, and is done again once or twice in the season to check for any change.

We have done everything we can think of to answer our question but have never corrected our issue. The boat, based on ST60 boat speed, loves port tack much more than starboard. Given, using GPS, it is closer than ST60, but still different. With consistent wind it can be .5 to 1 knot slower by reading on a starboard tack.

Initially I thought the issue was rig set up. After a couple of years, and having others check the rig, we have not been able to answer the WHY. As GPS puts us closer in speed, I thought that it must be that as the thru hull for the speedo is on port side of centerline near bow, that the water pressure would be different on each tack so info would be different.

The question: Does anyone else have this quandary or have opinions on the issue?

You should be able to get a dremel bit with a wire brush on it. Feed it into the slot and press it out into the T. Should work

Looks more like fairing or layers of bottom paint. What is the history on th boat? I ask because it looks like VC17 now, but was it something else prior and over laid wit VC. I see you are in Detroit. Freshwater, VC makes sense, but there is no way it would be as thick an application to show that much pitting.Freshwater also explains the sacrificial.

Tim,

With a swim platform I assume you must have a MKII. MKI ladder ideas would probably work for yoy. Your dink configuration also plays into this. I see no reason not to find a set of nice stainless handles that could make your wife happier and still look nice. Making the Admiral happy is the key.

OK, with the help of this site wegot the Kubota thermostat and gasket to mate with our engine. That was with 0 help from the local Kubota dealer.

Nowm the manual says that the gasket should be sealed, but it does not say with what! ?The Kubota guy says they don't seal theirs. So, having no faith in him, I ask the board for help again. What should we seal it with?

We are experiencing some over heating issues and beleive we have a bad thermostat as the problem is inconsistent. I beleive the Universal is a Kubota but in my search cannot find the Kubota model #. Wanting to get a part quickly a tractor supply will be faster in our area.
Thanks for any help.

No fix is going to be as strong as a new teak step. If you are not capable of doing the work, take it to a woodworker to replace. Not that expensive, and should only have to be done once!

Agree with Stu, no reason to dig around in the garage. If your pump is already out just open up the feeder line from the aft tank, and forward tank for that matter, and let it drain into the bilge. That should take care of it all.

MKII have the same set up as Paul. However, they used some very good glue/sealant on this install. Bolts came out as in Paul's case, did manage to capture ours. Bought a small spray bottle at WM that loosened sealant pretty well. Still took some leverage. In my case I used a rope vang from another boat. Placed a 2x6 across the bow pulpit and pulled slowly until things loosened up. As in most things boat, it would have helped to have long thin arms. I do not qualify on either count.

Paul, did you spend the summer in the North Channel again this year? How about a little recap of the trip and a top five if you have them?

Thanks

Bashing into those biggies to Frankfort should have shown any problems you may have. Congratulations on the journey and new home. Interlochen to Frankfort is not a quick trip, but Interlochen to Northport in the summer is a challenge. Those beautiful views we take for granted are being enjoyed by the fudgies....at 35 MPH!
I live in Cedar and NP is a easy trip most days. Love the options that it gives. If the wind is up stay in the bay. If not, go outside and you can almost always find some. Also a good starting point to Charlevoix, Beaver, Petoskey, etc. Have not made the trip to Frankfort but we keep talking about a run down with probably a stop in Leland.
Enjoy the rest of the season. September and early October can have some beautiful days.
