Title: waste tank thru hull drain valve lock
Post by: Voyager Bob on December 03, 2017, 02:11:42 PM
Regulations state the waste tank drain valve should be locked. Interested in simple ideas for how to lock the valve closed.

Simple, just look up the reg and it provides acceptable methods?

33 CFR 159.7

Years ago (on great lakes) the CDN CG required they be locked when visiting Canada.  Marinas sold an expensive ($15 maybe?) heavy, non-releasing, zip tie with a numbered tag on it that was recorded by the CG.

or,
Remove the hose?
If you also use it offshore, cap off a short hose stub on the macerator w/ a barbed fitting and threaded pvc cap (remove a possible discharge from the equation.)  Keep a (very discrete) hose with a female threaded barb on it and put it in place when you need it.

or, Ask your CG Aux who does the inspections.

Or don't go to Canada 😊

Our discharge valve has holes that will accept a lock.

15 years of CG Aux safety inspections, 2 CG safety inspections, 1 marine patrol inspection.  CG Aux were voluntary, other random.  All accepted a zip tie  looped around a second zip tie around the hose or fixed hole in the locker.

Over the last 10 years at our annual CGA inspection, they have accepted a zip tie on the handle to an adjacent hydronic heat line running through the locker.
