Title: Removing a gWind for winter
Post by: SPembleton on September 12, 2015, 05:17:38 PM
The Garmin manual on the gWind indicates that I should remove the masthead transducer every winter, keep it charged up, and then reinstall in the spring.  Do people really do this? Or is that just a manufacturers CYA?

The instructions for the gwind indicate that is the process.

Is the Sun so low up there that it's an issue with the charging of the gwind unit?

My question was not as much about charging, as about removing it every wnter. REALLY?

These are mechanical devices and as such they are wear items. Why let it needlessly wear itself out when you're not using the vessel? A wind vane removed for winter can easily last 15+/- years leave it running year round and you'll wind up with shorter life.. It takes all of ten minutes to go up in the chair and yank it....
