I have several Garhauer pin shackle blocks for my mast halyards that have damaged sheaves. Garhauer says they are not rebuildable as they have redesigned their line. So, I'm looking around for a suitable replacement sheave to install rather than the molded plastic ones installed. I'll probably just use a bolt and acorn nut rather than a rivet. Any thoughts on this?

If you are talking about the blocks at the base of the mast, I replaced all of mine with new Garhauer "mast collar" blocks. They are not that expensive and come with a new 10 year warranty plus the blocks are much better - lower friction, lighter.
I personnaly would not waste any time trying to rebuild a 10-15 year old design and would just spring for new blocks.
Lady Di is a 1991 model I bought 4 years ago and I have replaced every block / organizer / clutch with new Garhauer models. And in doing so, I did not spend very much money. If you use other brands, you will spend much more and I don't think you get a 10 year warranty. I am happy and Lady Di likes her new stuff.
Mike : Go with Jim's advice and replace those blocks with the new Garhauer ball bearing blocks. When you order those you may as well get the BB deck organizers/turning blocks.
Thanks guys, I've checked their website and the prices aren't all that bad. Time to put in an order, before you know it, it will be time to splash the boat.

Mike : I forgot to mention, you might consider getting a couple of ball bearing sheaves for the top of the mast (halyards) - so they're on hand when you pull the mast. Makes things pull much easier. A thought.
Thanks Ron, I've considered that, I'm thinking of pulling the mast at the end of the '06 season. As far as I know, it has never been off the boat. That would be a good time to start installing the ball bearing stuff. :thumb: I placed an order with Garhauer over the weekend. When things get warm enough in Baltimore I'll head down and put them on. April 1st :appl and tax day :sick will be here before ya know it.
Is there a part number for the mast head sheaves or will Garhauer know what I need from the boat description?
They know what a C34 needs.
Masthead Sheaves
36-MH length: width: 11/16

Just put three in my masthead, all except the topping lift.

Craig-How do you get access to the masthead sheaves? Thanks, Kerk
pull the mast
BillG said it admirably. You need to disconnect the head and back stays to pull the mast head that containes the hylard sheaves.
An interesting thing I just noticed about these blocks. Garhauer sells them direct for $17.95 while Catalina lists the exact same block for #24.95. :think Anyway I ordered from Garhauer and got them within two weeks. We'll be heading down to the boat (if it's not too cold) and installing them this weekend.
