I generally don't turn my battery charger switch off, so when ever the AC switch is on, it is working.  When I turn the AC switch on I hear very little change in the engine load as my Xantex 20 comes on line.  Water heater or A/C I get a significant change in engine load, so from that I don't think the battery charger has a big initial spike.  Don't have any performance figures to back that up.
